| Digitial phone sound quality is garbage
Brief overview of situation (tldr version): Phone emits a buzzing noise after getting HDTV service.
Longer version: I've had digital phone lite for over a year. It's been great (specifically sound quality) up until... I got HDTV service about 2 months ago. After that happened, by sound quality for digital phone has been terrible. There's a constant buzzing which makes even normal volume conversation difficult to hear. If the person on the other end is either a quiet talker or their phone is quiet, entire sentences can be missed.
Everything worked fine until I got HDTV (got the box, technician came over and did some stuff with the cable). There is nothing interfering with the phone, which is a 5.8 gHz Panasonic somethingorother (I realize that it's not 5.8 both ways, but I don't have anything near it operating on the 900mhz band, and besides, it worked fine before). I tried a different telephone cable to no avail. I suspect it's not the phone as otherwise it works fine. The sound exists during conversation and dial tone, so I can rule out other peoples' phones as the problem. It's also worth noting my Internet connection (Shaw's Xtreme-I) works the same as always and my TV signal seems great.
Given the timing of the problem's onset, I strongly believe it's somehow related to getting HDTV. I've talked to Shaw tech support and they weren't too much help. So I am asking here, hoping to find a solution or at least people who have experienced this. |

I always get echo's on mine if I try and speak over the other person on the line. That's the only complaint I have about the service. -- Tom |

| reply to ghat Yeah go direct to DPT to prove out something that may have happened to your phone wiring during your HD install. Then call 611 from your phone and have a service call booked out to fix it. I am really surprised you did not call in right away, seems everyone else does. |

| reply to ghat Dude, you got HD...
...That's a 7-10 Mbps touch to your connection. It's sucking up all your bandwidth, not to mention that HD has quality of service, meaning it gets the lions share, and anything else, like digital phone...
...well, your experiencing the result. |

| reply to Randsl Dude randsl dude, the digital phone works on its own frequency. You can watch TV, being downloading something on internet and still have a perfect call because they are not on the same frequency. When I was talking to the shaw tech, he said that the digital phone even has its own fiber strand.
On DSL it is different, if you are watching telusTV then your download speeds may go down. Because they share the same bandwidth.
If you are using something like vonage and are downloading things then you may have issues, but not with how the shaw phone works |

@shawcable.net | reply to ghat HDTV has it's own bandwidth that has nothing to do with the frequency spectrum or bandwidth allocation of the digital phone. It's probably something simple that needs to be looked at by a tech. Call in and book a free service call. |

@shawcable.net | reply to ghat I suspect that some phone wiring was disturbed when the tech was installing a split or something when HD was installed. Call 611 book a service call. |

| reply to ghat I'd call this a ground loop. Almost certainly, in fact. Call tech support and have them send out a technician with a ground loop isolator. It will be free of charge. Also, it'll likely clear up that annoying bright line scrolling up/down your tv screen that you didn't even mention..

Perhaps with all that spare bandwidth they have laying around they could have fixed my problem |
