That is probably a safe assumption. If your 5360 could handle the Pro line without problems before it began to die, then the 4100 or 4100b would too. Either modem will give you faster downloads while you are uploading though.

It is a shame about the eBay seller misrepresenting the modem on the auction though. That is deceitful. The seller obviously knew that the 4100b modem was more desirable. If you haven't opened the package, how do you know that it isn't a 4100b? None of the AT&T Yahoo modem packages say 4100b on them. They will say Speedstream 4101 on the bar code label. I wanted to contact the seller before opening up the package that contains the modem. Right now I running on AT&T Pro DSL 3.0MBps. I don't think i'll be upgrading any time soon. The next package is the Elite DSL which is 6.0MBps.

The only reason to get a 4100b is to squeeze out the last little bit of performance in the chipset. If you had a speed plan that was running at the ragged edge of stability, then the 4100b would be the modem you should have.

Are you planning to upgrade to faster speeds that would barely be possible on your loop? If you aren't, then the 4100 modem is fine for you. The 4100 and 4100b would give equal performance if your loop is well within the distance qualification limits for your speed plan.

AT&T doesn't issue this modem any longer because Siemens has exited the modem business. Nokia is handling the Speedstream modems now.

You can buy the 4100b still at some Best Buy stores in CA for $70 as an DSL starter kit. Hurry though because they are packing them up and sending them somewhere. Most Best Buy stores around the country now show as out of stock in this modem.

4100b's are available on eBay, but most are listed as 4100 modems.

The basic modem that AT&T is issuing now is the Motorola 2210. It does okay handling DSL connections. It has some diagnostics, but not all that the 4100b has. It even has a couple of stats that the 4100b doesn't have. It basically will be no better than your 5360 on download throughput when you are uploading: »ACK Prioritization: a 4100/4100b vs. 5360 shootout AT&T sells this modem in their online store for $49.

I guess this is an adequate modem. Motorola might know cable modems, but I don't think they are experts at DSL. Its has became really fustrating, especially after talking to SBC tech who says they wouldn't replace the modem due to being past the warentee. I'm currently borrowing an extra modem a friend of mines had, and it is a speedstream 5100 which is working fine. My questions are, what modem would be a good replacement for the SS 5360 ? What is at&t yahoo's current modem they are sending out now these days? Where's the best and cheapest place to purchase for this modem?
