[Troubleshooting] Keep losing connection

I had Verizons "unlimited" and got a bill for $2200 so needless to say that was cancelled. Too bad too bc it worked great for me.

Now I have Alltels UM150 modem. Well, it will just disconnect itself after 15-20 minutes. The box will pop up saying it has been disconnected. If that dont happen then all my programs like Yahoo IM or MSN log me out and "page cannot be displayed" shows up on my browser but still says Im conneceted. Is there anything I can do to keep my connection?

Sounds like you're not getting a strong enough signal.

You using an aircard or a tethered phone?

Also, why would Verizon bill you for that much? It's unlimited, but they have an FAP. As in you get slowed down by roughly 50%, but you don't face any additional charges. Sounds like some sort of error. Hope like hell you didn't pay it LOL.

Use the Quicklink and click "Help" then "About Quicklink Mobile"

Tell us what your RSSI is for both 1xRTT and 1xEVDO.

Im using the UM150 modem. Its the USB air card and its directly connected. Maybe a router in a high signal spot would work?

No I didnt pay Verizon that! LOL I called them and they tried to tell me I had to pay it and after 6 phone calls and about 12 people I finally got it removed. I was told I am allowed 5gigs and I used 7.5 at 49 cents per kb after or some garbage. I wish i could keep them but I cant afford $2000 a mo lol.

Also I have no idea what the Quicklink is. Sorry newb here.

Quicklink is the program used to dial in.

The shortcut is probably called "Axcess". Then just follow the instructions in my previous post. It came on the CD with your UM150.

Using an antenna and an amp will probably boost it to acceptable connection, but we won't know until ya find your signal readings for us. So get back asap with it =P

Ooh got it!

(1xRTT) -91dBm
(1xEVDO) -102 dBm

Yep that's the problem. Your signal is DEFF not strong enough for EVDO and BARELY strong enough to pick up RTT.

If you have a laptop try to do some tests outside and in different locations of the house.

What we want to do now is establish that you can get an "OK" connection without any assistance of an antenna or amp.

Most likely you'll need an antenna, but you may not have to buy an amp (good thing as they're expensive as hell).

Also can you see the tower from where you are located?

Not expensive at All for a good Antenna amplifier package . Alltel sells a full Cyfre Antenna /Amplifier kit to thier customers for $199.95 . That will definately solve your problems with those RSSI measurements

Moved around a little...

RTT - 88

What SHOULD i be around for it to be a good connection?

Optimum EVDO signal is between -75 and -65 . You will get highest upload and Download speeds and lowest latency anywhere in that range. Acceptable Signal occurs between -85 and -75 .You will have consistent signal and speeds and should not have many disconnects in that range . Keep in mind every 3db you gain your signal is doubled . So say you see an improvement 12db that means you signal 16 times stronger . A gain of 15 db means your signal is actually 32 times stronger

What adapter are you referring to? Also what is the DB of the antenna they sell? Was hoping to find one less expensive.

The kit includes a 5DB Magnetic Mount Antenna . That kit is a great deal for $199.95. You should price around you will not come close for a full package like that . Alltel sells them really cheap to help customers out With those signal level is too low for consistent service.
Just an antenna will not get the job done you need at those RSSI readings. The adapter goes from the UM150 to the amplifier. I think Alltel charges $10.95 for it

Im just wanting to be mobile in my house. I dont want to have a bunch of crap connected to my laptop so was just curious if the antennas, amps, etc can all be connected to a router that can be used with the UM150 USB modem.
