| 2 Lines + Pfsense Load Balancing = Whoot!
Ok so I got a dryline installed today. Both lines only sync at 3mbit down and 800kbit up.
Tonight I setup Load Balancing on PFsense and I may not even need MLPPP.
The test was a 9gig file from usenet running on 8 threads.
The top photo is of a my realtime bandwidth monitors. The top graph is my "Wet Line" DSL which I run all my servers etc... off of with static IP's etc..
The 2nd graph is the new dryline and both are maxed out.
As you can see I am able to max out both lines when downloading from usenet.
I tried BT tonight about 3:30am downloading a copy of SUSE 10.3. I didn't think it would work but at one point I was going about 450k/sec. The wet line was taking most of the beating. But the nice thing is even with a BT download going I could still come on DSLReports without any lag in surfing.
Now with PFSense it will Round Robin the connections unless you setup rules not too.
The 3rd image is the rules in PFSense. Have it setup to send all my SMTP traffic, DNS Traffic and my audio feed across the "Wet Line" anything that does not match those rules are round robined.
I don't think I will even do mlppp now since this seems to work quite well for me. Also gives me failover protection. 1 line fails I just keep going on the other. |

Looks good. However don't know I need that much speed and I would be more interested in going the route of mlppp. Have read many threads on it but it is still over my head how to set it up.
However now I have dumped my land line and my cable line the cost to setup two lines with TSI really is not that expensive compared to what I was spending.
Would be nice to have too 6/1 lines out west in Telus land where there is no throttling yet  |

I'm not sure what my final bill will be with teksavvy after all this but I expect it to be less then it would cost to go with cogeco
And if I can bribe rocky is into getting rid of that pecky band rate. :-p/ |

I would be willing to pay a fairly high price for two 6/1 connections unthrottled.
I would want them joined so they were one line that was 12/2 and I think that is how mlppp makes it work but am not sure.
You would get 400 gigs bandwith per month and a very nice upload/download speed (well unless you are in Bell throttle land then it would suck)  |

And from what I understand with MLPPP you need to have the same sync rates on both lines for it to work. That doesn't happen with the load balancing.

That makes sense as to why you said if a line goes down you can still use the other.
Still rather have MLPPP and work out the sync rates.

| I maxed out at 10.5 MB/s on a torrent from a private tracker at LAN ETS, where they had a 150mbit fibre connection just for the lan.
At those speeds, uTorrent was rather taxing on the laptop, and consumed quite a bit of memory for the disk cache.
Some advantages of MLPPP over load balancing: Better compatibility with all applications, speed benefits in single-stream scenarios (HTTP download, for example), potentially lower latency. |

jayman, that's pretty nice. i'm in the same boat as you stuck at 3meg. can you give me a rough estimate on what it would all cost to set up? i'm looking for initial hardware plus monthly tsi bill. also, what's the added latency, if any? i'm a gamer so that's an important concern of mine. |

| In a proper MLPPP config, the latency is at worse the same and at best slightly lower (due to splitting packets).
Allow me to provide ballpark calculations: with 800kbit upstream sync, and something like ~700kbit maximum IP transfer speed (before overhead of TCP or IP), it would take about 17ms to send a 1500 byte packet over your DSL line. By this I mean to your first hop, this ignores all the latency of the actual internet.
MLPPP splits that, so ignoring all extra overhead, you'd save about 8ms on a full packet by using MLPPP with packet splitting.
You'd save a bit too if packets were split on the downstream, but TSI doesn't do that.
So, my ballpark calculations say MLPPP is at worst the same, at best 8ms less on a full packet. Games, of course, don't send full packets, actual benefits are likely lower. |

Hardware: 1 computer to run PFsense on (or Vmware) I use a P3 500mhz machine with 512 Ram(I had spare ram) and a 9 gig HD.
3 NIC's LAN, WAN, WAN2
2 DSL Modems (or more if you want to do more)

PFsense is just round robining my connections over 2 lines.
Open IE once get 1 IP, Open it again get the 2nd IP, Open it a 3rd time and I should be back on IP 1 |

Keep in mind God27 the specs Jayman gave aren't all needed ie the 512MB of ram and 9 GB HD. PfSense runs on a min 128 MB and could easly fit on a compact flash/or similar device. I use a old 800 Meg HD myself.
