[DSL] Can't connect to certain websites...

I have been dealing w/ this problem for almost 2 months now and I got nothing. Until a friend refers me to this page. I found this site very educating especially to those internet -savvy people. I've been experiencing problems connecting to certain websites such as Friendster, NBA.com, ESPN.com and even, News articles on the Yahoo! page. It always give me "Error: Host not accessible". But, most of the other sites are connecting just fine like Yahoo, Google and MSN. I ended up using web-based proxy servers and manual proxy configuration to access "blocked sites".

I don't want to use proxies forever because. they slow my connection and they are just not reliable most of the time. I'm using WinXP SP 2 and also uses IE, Safari but I use Firefox a lot. I've tried all basic troubleshooting steps available including changing my MTU, deleting cookies, checking my browser set-up and turning them to 'default" and changing RWIN settings to 65535. I've lowered down my MTU from 1500 to 1492 and still the same. My ISP's advertised speed is 384 kb/s both for download and upload. I am slowly getting out of my mind. I've called up my ISP here in the Philippines., Smart BRO and they did nothing to help me at all. All I got was the connection is good and it could just be a pc problem. I really don't know what to do. Please somebody help me! I want to access NBA and ESPN sites especially, this playoff season.

Here are the details to these problem:

1.»/tweakr/block:···a=normal

2. I used Speakeasy for the speedtests:
A. Seattle, WA
Download Speed: 330 kbps (41.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 278 kbps (34.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

B.SF, CA
Download Speed: 379 kbps (47.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 291 kbps (36.4 KB/sec transfer rate

C.Dallas, TX
Download Speed: 383 kbps (47.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 272 kbps (34 KB/sec transfer rate)

3.I have a DSL Broadband wireless type of connection here in the Philippines and my ISP is SMART BRO.

4.I am using Win/Xp SP2 and the advertised speed of my ISP is 384 kb/s both for download and upload

5. I am using a PC that is not connected to a network and there's no router to the set-up.

Can anyone shed light on this and point me in the right direction?

Thanks! I will appreciate any reply! God bless!

2 things pop into my head. First is your ISP is preventing access to the sites. If that's the case, all I'm aware of is using a proxy server that you can access since your ISP only sees the proxy server.

The other idea is you are dealing with DNS issues. DNS resolves the human name like www.nba.com into the machine IP like 65.124.15.17

If it's DNS, you can try a few things like use someone else's DNS server vs the one your ISP provides. Since you are in the Philippines you would want to look for a reliable local one. If you can't, an alternative is to run your own local one using a program like »ntcanuck.com/ and point it to a reliable DNS server. That would allow you to cache the frequently used ones local vs go overseas for each request. You can use the DNS servers from »www.opendns.org listed at »https://www.opendns.com/start and specify them on your PC or configure Treewalk to use them.

Try the 2nd options first since you can't do much about the first. Let us know how it goes.

Hi Geek!

Thanks for your suggestions! I did try the 2nd option you provided. I used both opendns and Treewalk as my dns servers but, it seem to slow down my connection. Also, I still can't access websites like NBA.com or Friendster. I ended up still using proxy servers. Can you still think of some other ways to get problem done?!? I highly suspect that my ISP is blocking access to those sites and they just don't want to tell. I'm really hoping that this still could be fix. Thanks again!!!

What happens when you tracert to www.nba.com? Open a command prompt window and type:

tracert www.nba.com

I'm on vacation at my parents in FL and here's a tracert from their connection.

Where does yours stop? Compare it to say a tracert to something in the US which isn't blocked. Post them here and maybe we can notice something.

Hi Geek!!!

How are you doing? Nice time to spend vacation in Florida. i did some tracert to different sites and here's what I found. I used Tracert for NBA several times and it usually stops at the 11th hop. Also, I did tracert to CNN.com and I got request timed out at the 17th hop though, I can access that site just fine. I also tried Microsoft.com and I got timed out at the 18th hop and yet I can also access it just fine. On the other hand, I did tracert to Speakeasy website and it was good. I can access it as well on my browser.

So, hopefully you could take a closer look into these results and make good suggestions on how to get this done. Talk to you again!! Enjoy your vacation there as well!

HI Geek!!!

How is it going over in the sunny Florida?!? I have changed my ISP yesterday and it seems that the problem is really on my pc. I can't still access the websites like NBA.com, ESPN.com and Friendster. Is there a problem on my Ethernet card?! I have re-installed it already and the problem is still there. I also tried to use OpenDNS once again for this new ISP and no resolution yet. Do you think this could still be solved?!? Do I need now to buy a new Ethernet card!??

I'm back in New Jersey and it looks like rain for an entire week so no sun here

From a previous post above, you were getting out onto the Internet before you ran into an issue so it doesn't seem like your PC is preventing access.

Can you run another tweak test at »/tweaks since your previous one has expired.

Oh, so you're back in NJ now. Anyway, this is my new tweak test. »/tweakr/block:···nXPpppoe

Hopefully, you could notice anything that is not normal for dsl so, I could change it immediately.

It looks ok other then a slightly low MTU but that shouldn't be an issue.

Do you have a firewall or Internet suite running on your computer?

Is anything on the router configured for a firewall or SPI?

Just for giggles, have you run a virus scan on your computer making sure your virus definitions are up to date?

Have you tried a different browser to see if that had any effect?

I am on my phone on my way to the office so it is hard to check if you posted any answers to these already.

Well, I do only have Windows firewall on my pc. And I have already tried to disabled it several times to check my connectivity. Also, I'm using Avast Pro V. 4.8 as my anti-virus software and it updates itself automatically every day. I don't think my anti-virus is blocking any access coz' I have checked that already. i have tried both IE, firefox and Safari as my browsers and wait... Oh my goodness!!! You know what?!? I was just able to access NBA, ESPN w/o any proxies. Whoah! I was doing some tweaks w/ Dr. TCP last night and I think I have hit the jackpot! I am all good to go now! I can browse any website w/ ease already. Thanks man for all your help!! Have a good day!!! Well, I will let you know later if this is not a fluke. I will try to access it again once I get home from work!!! Keep ballin!!!!

Well actually, I celebrated too soon!!! After being able to access sites such as NBA.com, ESPN.com for at least 3 days, it came back to haunt me again. When I went online this afternoon, I tried to access NBA again and to my dismay I can not access it anymore. I did not change any settings in my connection after I tweaked it using Dr.TCP 3 days ago. I tried to re-do my tweaking and yet it did not work.

Well, back to square one for me again. I hope I could resolve as soon as possible and I will let you know Koops. Have a good day!!!
