| [Equipment] Need 20.0 Mbps Wired Firewall / Router Recommendatio
After taking up Insight on the $10 extra for 20.0 service, I have found out that my Netgear FVS318 (wired) firewall / router tops out at around 10 Mbps. Doh!
I can get the Netgear FVS338, which has a claimed throughput of 95 Mbps, for around $200, but I'd like to know if anyone can recommend a good 20 Mbps capable wired router, preferably at lower cost. |

Cablevision's Optimum Online service has had a 30/5 tier for some time, and many users got caught in the same black hole.
See their FAQ - which lists compatible routers based on real user experience and testing - here: »Optimum Online FAQ »What Routers are Compatible with OOL's 15/2 and 30/5 (BOOST) Plans? |

| I have a WRT54GL with Tomato firmware installed, don't have to do that but I did, I then setup a local speedtest server on my home network and get wired about 90/90 and wireless about 20/20...

Problem solved. I got a Linksys WRT54G2 today at Circuit City for $50. I'm not using the wireless on it, just the wired Ethernet connections. Now my speed is up to 16665 kbps, and that is at Saturday evening peak load times. |

| reply to dark_star Just for other folks, I'd suggest the D-Link DGL-4300.
It's a wireless super G router with 4 ethernet ports. It's had great reviews across the board, been probably 1 of 2 pieces of equipment in my network that's never failed or given me a headache. The UI is clean and simple.
The wireless range is really great, I can get signal out to a road 365 ft. out front of my home and the antenna is in a normal position. So figure a 365 ft. omnidirectional range. Works great for gaming, but I still ran all cable to all my systems.
You can find the routers on eBay somewhat cheap, plus there's a Yahoo retailer that has sales once in a while - you can get it for about $90. |
