| Ten percent of subscribers consume 80 percent of bandwidth, a super-leeching 0.5 percent swallow 40 percent of bandwidth, and the rest like your mom, 80 percent, sip less than 10 percent. But p2p isn't the culprit.
They've only accounted for 90% of the users. What about the other 10%?
The 0.5% using 40% bit actually does work out as feasible. If an ISP had 1000 users and each user had 5mbit/s, and 0.5% (5) used up 40% of the bandwidth (presuming they max out their connections 24/7), that means that they're using 25mbit/s.
This means that the total bandwidth usage of the remaining 99.5% of users is 37.5mbit/s, as they must use 60%. Average per remaining users (995) is 0.038mbit/s, or 12.2 GB/mth.
Their 10% use 80% figure: We've established that the 0.5% must max out their connection. The fictional average bandwidth load for this ISP is 62.5mbit/s. This means that those 10% of users account for 50mbit/s.
So, 0.5% use 25mbit/s, the remaining 9.5% use the other 25mbit/s, and the average usage of the top 10% (100 users) is 0.5mbit/s (160.5GB/mth).
That means the remaining 90% of users, consuming 20% of the bandwidth, average 0.014mbit/s (4.5GB/mth).
The "lower" 80% of users, who consume 10% of bandwidth, their average usage is 0.0078mbit/s (2.5GB/mth).
Now, if we keep the assumption that those 0.5% max out their lines (they don't), then my bandwidth average figures actually apply to the real world. If that 0.5% use less than full speed, then my figures would scale down as well.
2.5GB/mth or less for 80% of customers sounds feasible to me. I know that my parents (on Sympatico due to bundles) probably use less than that for the two of them.
SUMMARY:
Top 0.5% use 1605GB/mth Top 10% use 160.5GB/mth Lower 90% use 4.5GB/mth Lower 80% use 2.5GB/mth
If Rocky gave us figures for what their top 0.5% use, I could scale my figures to match reality better; it's likely that that top 0.5% don't max out their connection 24/7. I'm also ignoring overhead. |

| Those figures will change when YouTube HD comes out. The rest of the world will be on it but not people who are from Ontario Canada they'll be speed throttled down to 30 kilobytes per second or less so the old YouTube will barely work. Well we can read about what the Americans think of it when they use it. |

| reply to The Flash I say, so what. Even if 10% use 80%, as long as I pay for that 60 gigs, or 100 or 200 gigs, I should be able to what ever I want. In Bibic's interview he says that the majority use very little bandwidth, which makes sense. But do they expect everyone to use very little bandwidth? I know they'd love to see only 50% of their capacity being utilized so they can milk as much as they can from us while saving money on bandwidth. So let the grandmothers and soccer moms use 1% of the bandwidth on emails and facebook, while the rest use the remaining bandwidth on what ever they want to use it. |

@teksavvy.com | reply to The Flash YouTube HD huh? Guess its time for me to learn Japanese and move to Japan (or Utah/Utopia!)

noted.
After seeing this post, I did some quick research and you are right. approx 94.8% of forum viewers enjoy percentile projections. Furthermore, if percentiles are placed in a subject line, there is an incredible 400% viewer increase!
Next time I post, I promise to put in some random percentiles.. |

| Good thing I happen to have this handy then! As you can see, the data clearly shows an increase of yellow, while the black maroon decreases substantially, but what the graph does not show, is that the black maroon only decreases after ingestion of pellet, or power-pellet.
Genius.

| reply to The Flash now turn the purple part into a picture of that stupid beaver and have a hat that says THROTTLER. LOL
gave me an idea fo rhte next game ill make opensource a pac man like one where it eats up beavers and after it eats a bandwidth pill it goes on a real rampage of course your shaped (slower until you eat a pill) |
