[TWC] Mystro not ready for prime time?

Hello,

I live in San Diego, California. About 2 months ago we had Mystro pushed to our SA 8000 box. Funny, we were never notified of the imminent s/w push? We were not even given the option to decline the s/w push.

Anyway. Today, after running some errands, I came home at 12:30pm ( 4/23/08 ) and turned on the TV and the cable box. I accessed the guide and scrolled around for about 20 seconds. Then the guide got stuck. About the 5 seconds later I got the dreaded b-o-o-t message. And the box spent 4 minutes re-loading the s/w.

My wife and I have seen instances where the box stops recording live TV. This may be due to the fact that the 2 tuners were already busy and a scheduled show was about to begin. But no message was displayed on the screen if that indeed was the case.

Also, the TWC guide database for San Diego has "new" listed for shows that have already aired and the show in question is actually a re-broadcast. Thus the box records the show twice.

Also, Passport was more polite when the 2 tuners are busy and there is a scheduled show about to start recording. Passport would display a message saying the tuners are busy. Mystro seems to just jump to the scheduled show without asking anything.

Loading data.... that's the message I get a lot around San Diego. "Loading data...". Ha! Why not have 6 days of guide data pre-loaded. The thing has a hard drive doesn't it?

Maybe there is a s/w update to Mystro already. I don't know. I just hope some of the most glaring bugs are dealt with soon.

Well, first of all box updates are always out of user control. Since you don't own the box, you don't have any control as to what goes on there.

That said, all of the above were issues I had with my box also when it got upgraded a few months ago. Not much that can be done about it unfortunately besides telling TW about it and deleting the fake "New" shows...

One more thing. Yes, its a small thing.

Passport had clearer PiP. The PiP with Mystro is extremely grainy.

With Passport, I could watch a game in PiP while another game was playing on the full screen. The game thats was running in PiP I could read the scores! It was that clear.

With Mystro, I cant read the scores for the game in PiP.

And Passport had two PiP sizes. Which was cool.

Well the problem i had with my 8300hdc dvr, turned out to be a blessing in disquise it was making a loud popping sound
so took it too the twc store and exchanged it and lo and behold , I got the 8300 hd dvr no cablecard and when i got it home and to my extreme happiness it is still running Passport ,only thing is the Passprt software does not feature caller id on tv. i,ll see how long it takes before we have mystro forced on us

Yes. I have read on other threads that some of TWC Customer Support staff is accepting boxes with Mystro in return for a box with Passport. And they 'promise' they will not push the Mystro SW on to the unit any time soon.

I received the TWC Mystro software update to my
8300 HD DVR box about two weeks ago. I have to
say that i really like the overall features.
I have an external 1 tyrbyt. drive that functions
beautifully with it. All my recorded shows were
properly visible even with the new software update.
It even tells me the % of disk space left.

I'm sorry to report I like it. And the
caller ID on TV is pretty cool!

I, too, am another person who is optimistic about Mystro and willing to live with a few really minor bugs for the short-term.

Rombus See Profile has stated elsewhere in this forum that in relation to something like Passport, Mystro has only been through so many software revisions in it's handful of months of use in comparison to Passport's years of active deployment and countless revisions. It's bound to have bugs as such an infant piece of software.

In fact, I'm quite surprised it has so few as it is. I've had it both on my previous explorer 8000 box upgraded from passport echo and also on my current 8300hdc running ocap/mystro stock and aside from some negligible slowdown, there have really only been a handful of tiny bugs that really do not hinder the experience as much as some here may claim.

Now there are a FEW features that are otherwise missing from mystro that were in passport that would be nice to see put back in (for example: C button from guide goes to 'find shows' list with the previously highlited show selected. Also, on a minor basis: Being able to set series recordings to record x show from only the original channel or from all channels it's found on), but I'm sure in due time we will see them. At least with mystro being worked on in-house, it has the chance (theoretically) to have revisions and updates rolled out quicker rather than having to contract out updates through Aptiv in the case of Passport.

The ONLY thing I have a major gripe over, but would end up being a 'barking at a brick wall' type deal is the lack of any decent diagnostics on the box. Even on the older 8000 after the upgrade, the mystro on screen diagnostics offered about the same as passport: tuner signal info, QAM info, disk drive info, etc.. With the 8300hdc mystro configuration, there really is very little useful info past the software revisions and dates. Possibly also SDV info once it's enabled in this area. But being this was never meant to be customer accessible to begin with (or, should be rephrased like modem diagnostics. It's there, but don't expect the techs to care that you can see the QAM tuner's not synch'd), it's mostly a misnomer.

There are two sets of diagnostics you can access on the SA8300HDC running Mystro. It sounds like you found the first one which is accessed by holding down the SEL button on the remote until the mail icon flashes and then pressing the down arrow. This is what I refer to as the software diagnostics.

You can see the firmware diagnostics from the box itself (not the remote) by holding both the Vol+ and Vol- buttons simulataneously until the mail icon flashes and then pressing the Ch+ button. This gives you 16 pages of diagnostics and some of those pages have "sub" pages.

Thanks. That's a huge help. I was so used to the method from the old SA boxes to just punch in either channel 611 or 1611 on passport or the long way of info+sel then exit on the box for mystro and when neither worked, I thought they locked it out altogether or limited what the SW diagnostics listed.

Just out of curiosity, is the MYSTRO package compatible/available for the MOTOROLA HD DVR and HD Cable boxes?

I have a Motorola HD DVR (DCT6412 III) in the living room and Motorola HD non-DVR (DCH6200) boxes in the bedrooms. MYSTRO is not on-line (yet) here in Carlsbad (92008 - former Adelphia territory). I have been reading the posts regarding this package. However, unless I missed something, people talk about the SA boxes... not the Mororola ones. Is MYSTRO brand-centric?

Not at this time for Moto boxes running legacy software.

Mystro either runs an OCAP version or a version compatible with SA legacy. The vendor hired to make it compatible for Moto legacy stopped earlier this year.

See this:

It's possible for the Moto DCH boxes to run it, as they are OCAP compatible, but I haven't seen it yet.

Since Monday, April 28th, 2008, my SA 8000 box with Mystro re-booted twice.

The last boot caused Caller ID to stop working.

I have solved all my problems with Mystro!

Cancelled after 24 years.

Seems like I'm not the only one with the reboot problem. I wrote time warner an email explaining that my SA 8300 was "rebooting", it powers off, then reboots, several times a day, most often when I play a show off "list". They wrote back telling me they rebooted my system, UM. Anyway, so is it a SA 8300 box problem or is it a problem on their end with the software and I have to wait it out?

Or have did anyone come up with a solution other than cancel service to this rebooting problem with the SA 8300?

When my SA 8300 kept rebooting on Charter's cable service, after the second 8300 didn't fix it, I requested a different model box and got my current Moxi.

Good... then I don't have to worry about the MYSTRO nightmare for the time being as my Motorola DCT DVR is not compatible

Annoying bugs in mystro i have found.

I had paused the show i was watching. I opened up the guide and decided to look for something i wanted to record that was on in about a week. I scroll forward in time on the guide and when it got to the point it had to get more data for the guide it made what i had paused go live and i lost the few minutes i was browsing the guide. Grrrr

Also i was recording a Cavs game that i had started watching late so i could breeze through commercials. I decided i should probably set the end time back an extra half hour so I did not miss the end. When you adjust the end time of a show your recording and watching at the same time the box goes live and deletes everything up until the live point. I was so pissed off. Passport didnt do that kind of crap.

Plus i hate the blue color scheme its too bright.

I got the new bad program about a week ago and my 8300HD (using HDMI) just continued to reboot as it pleased after the upgrade. I had TW of Raleigh come out and they replaced the DVR with the new improved 8300HDC, this is the worst upgrade I have ever seen. If they keep improving it...we will not be able to use it at all!!! Having just read all the above comments, I have experienced most of the problems plus some new ones. TW called today to see how everything was working, I told them either come fix this or get it out of the house!!! I can not believe that some of the execs at TW did not use this stupid software before send it out to the customers. It is the most un-user friendly piece of programing I have ever used. If I have no luck later today when the tech comes by, I will switch to sat. real quick. I am paying more to TW for my services than my electric, water, and garbage bills all together total each month and they all seem to work fine!
