Philly Fox 29 loosing HD

Has anyone else in the Philadelphia area been loosing HD on channel 234? All night yesterday and today the channel will drop out for a second and come back on in 4:3 SD stereo, then a few minutes later goes back to 16:9 HD DD5.1. I came on here expecting to see a thread or two about it, but i guess i must be the only one, or maybe its limited to my local office (sellersville)?

It's because their insertion gear was adding in that ticker across the bottom with the PA primary results. I know it pissed me off too, they should of waited for commercials for the ticker scroll.

I guess the computer that adds in those graphics can't handle mixing in HD from Fox at the same time, so it would turn the feed into SD, then a minute later the ticker would come on. When the ticker went off, a minute would go by and then it would turn HD again.

They ran the ticker practically through the entire episode of Hells Kitchen. It Pissed me off. CBS was not as intrusive with their PA primary polling updates.

Pissed me off too here in central NJ. Not only did the picture shrink from 16:9 to 4:3 and the sound field collapse from 5.1 to stereo with each FREQUENT ticker insertion, but the overall VOLUME of the digital audio kept dropping abruptly as well. My family found that more disturbing than anything else. You could turn up the volume to compensate but then when they reverted back it would be blasting. Very annoying when trying to listen critically to the Idol performances (which, judging by last night's results, was obviously NOT what the people who voted were doing!) And the extra-long delay from the end of the visible ticker until the return to HD/5.1 was ridiculous.

Can't wait for Verizon to enable FiOS TV here so I can tap into the HD network feeds out of New York City. If it had been in place the other night I would have just flipped to NY FOX 5 HD (or more likely I would have been watching that channel to begin with and not even known about the WTXF HD issue ).

Well, now that the election is over, that should stop happening...

Like Cypher said, KYW had no problems mixing in the ticker with the HD.

This also happens over on NBC 10 during hockey games on the weekend, when they add a ticker for "Flyers Season Tickets" for EVERY NHL game they air...Quite annoying...

nothing ever gets mixed over commericals. when i lived back in CT and was in school they wouldnt even run snow closings over an ad. im guessing the advertisers have something in the contract where their video cant have anything over it.

Well that sucks, because for one, if they had news or some kind of ticker along the bottom of the screen during commercials... I am more likely to stay tuned, not leave the room, not skip over the block of commercials. While I might be reading the ticker at the bottom, that commercial is still running along with it's audio... so it's not like I'm oblivious as to what the current ad is for on TV. The fact they fudged up shows during primetime is a total lack of respect for the viewing audience. Either 1) Display updates during a local commercial segment, 2) Get equipment that doesn't ruin the HD experience when adding a scrolling ticker, 3) Just wait until the Fox 10 o'clock news. After all the real results aren't ready until around that time and later, so whats with all the updates. That's what the internet is for.

I was planning on writing Fox 29 a nasty e-mail, but I've decided not to, as it would just be a utter waste of my time. I'm sure that the PA primary's hold high importance than over say.. American Idol or Hell's Kitchen.

If you thought Idol's interruptions were bad, think again... Practically the entire episode of Hell's Kitchen was ruined due to their shotty graphics overlay system. I ended up using my TV's zoom in control, and I positioned the screen with the up arrow so that I saw more of the show vs. the annoying ticker. After these shows is the news, so If I want to know the results of the primary I'll stay tuned, or run to the computer.

Yea Hell's Kitchen was obliterated by WTXF on Tues night. Probably at least 80% of the show was SD, and the annoying crap results on the bottom pretty much the whole show.

(FYI, Fox now has full eps "On Demand" on their website, all the shows availible, using the same player that ABC uses, by MoveNetworks. It works great, the quality is pretty decent. I can put up with a 30 second of commercials every break instead of 3 minutes like on TV.)

Also when they had the SD feed on, I noticed many more annoying "pop ups" advertising their own shows. Not on the HD feed, yet.... probably will be in time.

KYW probably has the equipment to do it in HD because their entire studio/operation was built from the ground up only last year. I'm sure the equipment to do insertions in HD was in there somewhere.

Well its well past the PA primaries and i'm still having this issue, but i'm starting to think its a problem with the DVR. EVERY single time i record something on FOX (usually Idol) it drops in and out of HD throughout the program. I can't remember it ever happening while watching live TV except for voting day.

I just witnessed FOX 29 loose HD just to print the " WTXF TV / DT PHILADELPHIA " text across the bottom of the screen. Then when the station ID went off, it took about 20 seconds for their system to revert back to the HD feed.

Every other channel can superimpose station identification without disrupting the HD feed. What's up with WTXF FOX 29?

Yeah...I saw it again tonight on American Idol. It's REALLY annoying and disruptive, especially the way the digital audio changes at the same time. Very amateurish!
