Changed Qwest DSL service, now have connection problems.

Hi,

A little background. Up until yesterday, I had been getting my Qwest DSL paid for by my employer, by that program ended. I was on the 1.5Mb/s plan, so I signed up for Qwest DSL silver to get the same connection speed. Yesterday, a tech showed up at my house to re-wire the phone jack in my office. It had been a dedicated line for my DSL service when my employer was paying for it, but I wanted that phone jack switched back to my home phone line now that I was to pay for it.
Afterwards, I had to swap out DSL modems. The old Actiontec GT701 had to be returned, so I had it replaced with a M1000. Otherwise, nothing else changed. I now have the M1000 connected to a ZyXEL HS-100 router (firewall currently disabled in both). My main PC is connected to the router by a 10/100 ethernet cable, and I have two other computers connected by 802.11G, all running Vista.

Now, here's the problem. First, it only happens in Firefox 2. IE7 and Opera work fine. But in Firefox, I can no longer access any subdomains on Yahoo.com. www.yahoo.com works fine, by my.yahoo.com, tv.yahoo.com, sports.yahoo.com, etc... all fail with this error:

"The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"

Again, they all work fine in IE 7 or Opera.

Here's the trace route if that helps:

Tracing route to my.yahoo4.akadns.net [216.252.123.25]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

13 64 ms 65 ms 65 ms p1.my.vip.sp1.yahoo.com [216.252.123.25]

Trace complete.

Finally, my connection seems a lot slower than before, and most speed tests only show about 1/2 of my 1.5Mb/s download speed and none have been able to complete an upload test. And qwest support has, so far, not been helpful.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Did you put filters on all your phones and fax machines.

not yet, but tonight I plan on unplugging all phone devices save for the DSL to see what happens.

Is the new modem configured for pppoe or pppoa? I had a qwest tech recommend I switch to pppoe in prep for an order upgrade, and my upload speed dropped to nothing. I switched it back to pppoa, and the problem went away.

I was also seeing the yahoo problem while using pppoe.

I don't pity you. My 7Mbps/896Kbps status went from the mid 50ms to 132ms.

An update. If I run the speed tests in IE, I see download results that match my expectations (1.2, 1.3 Mbps). While previously, my DSL connection was nearly 100% up to expectations, it is now about 80%. Most sites work fine, but now in both IE and Firefox, I can only see the main Yahoo site. All other Yahoo sites (sports.yahoo.com, mail.yahoo.com, etc...) eventually error out. Basically, anything with a subdomain under Yahoo. Also, I get an error logging into Windows Live messenger, and have to do a check/repair. Unfortunately, I haven't written down the error code, but can provide that next time. Also, I'm no longer able to log into Hotmail.

This is really annoying, and happens on all the computers in the house. There wasn't a single problem until I switched out the account for my DSL, had the phone jack re-wired and changed DSL modems.

Qwest chat support was worthless, the chat agent's view as that if I can connect to just one site, then things are working properly.

I couldn't find the screen on the M1000 to make that change...

griz whats the firmware that you have? access the gui first. the usual »192.168.0.1 go to quick set-up. click on the link under the apply button "Click here for advanced settings only if required by your ISP" and change the from pppoe to pppoa. given you have qw01 firmware.

Success!!!! Changing from PPPOE to PPPOA did the trick! Thanks demoniacs for showing me where to find that setting. This seems to have fixed all the connection problems, and download/upload speed tests are now in line with what I should be getting. Thanks again!!!
