[Notebooks] Shutdown, sleep, standby

Getting a new Dell XPS M1330 laptop. Can someone tell me the best times to use shutdown, sleep and standby? I'm assuming standby for when you are going away from the notebook for 10 or 15 minutes. I would assume shutdown for when you go to bed or won't be using for extended periods. When would you ever use sleep? I guess you could use sleep instead of shutdown, but isn't that still using power (less but still using)?

Here's a description of all modes.

Hope that helps.
