Crosby is already signed. I expect Hossa to leave - he is a rent a player traded in for a couple 3rd/4th line guys who never developed like they should have. Pittsburgh will put more energy into trying to keep their drafted / long time players like Malkin.

Malkin will probably stay. Crosby took less money than he could have, and other players may very well follow his lead to play for a winner and in a good hockey atmosphere. Pittsburgh has a sell out streak that goes back to last season (they sold out every game this yr). They had to create a season ticket waiting list because all but 2K of the seats are bought by season ticket holders. They had to let people buy individual tickets. The people on the list each put down $200 non-refundable and last I heard the list was 1500+ people. Add in the new arena, and there is plenty of incentive to take a little less than open market to stay.

Don't forget that the Pens will not be the only team dealing with the cap. Nobody else will be able to come in and offer crazy salaries either.

How about Jagr. He is by far your best player and he's in his last year isn't he?
mglunt : Crosby is already signed through the 2012-2013 season.

Also, the CBA would not set a number like 8 million. They would base it off of a percentage of the cap since it will change every year. The only rule I know of is that one person can't make more than 20% of the total cap, which at the time of the Crosby deal (July 2007) was 50.3 Million, so 10.06 was the max for a single player. Crosby's cap hit is 8.7 Million a year... he wears #87 and was born on 8/7/87 (exactly 10 years after me).

The Salary Cap started at 39 Million in 05/06, so they have already jumped it over 10 million in 2 years. With the new arena and the increasing cap (tied to 54% of league revenue), they may be able to at least make a run at keeping most players. Especially if they are winning here.

It's off topic for this thread but I'm hoping you'll be checking back here. My question is about another long-term complaint here and that's the guide data. I believe FIOS uses FYI. The data is terrible compared to TV Guide on my old service, lots of titles with blank descriptions. Lots of data that's flat out wrong. Many times I set my DVR and end up missing the recording because the data is wrong. What's up with this service? Did Verizon choose FYI because they are flat out the cheapest service? Do they ever plan on upgrading to a better service? As you know I'm a sports fan and games change sometimes on a daily basis. FYI data is ALWAYS wrong with playoff games because things change so quickly. My old service always seemed to get it right and I'm hoping Verizon can also.

Last night I had to watch my Flyers playoff game on Versus in SD while all my Comcast friends watched the game in HD. Last year my Phillies playoffs on TBS were in SD while Comcast carried the HD feed. Factor in the lack of sports season pass access and the complains in this thread and it's obvious that Verizon did not make any type of sports programming a priority with their service. Was this a conscious decision by Verizon or just a lack of planning? Do you feel they've been blindsided with sports programming issues or do they consider this simply a minor annoyance?

I'd probably stick it to them with their 2-yr agreement. I'd want a letter stating I can back out of the contract if they don't deliver the HD channels as promised. Otherwise, they're doing a bait and switch to sign you up and that should be illegal.

Korro : I live in the Pittsburgh are, and the Pittsburgh Pens are doing awesome in the playoffs. I gave FIOS a break on not having FSNHD during the first series...but now that the game is going to be on VERSUS tonight and we again do not have VERSUS HD I am starting to get a bit upset. FIOS TV is by far the worst cable company when it comes to sports HD programming locally. Comcast, Armstrong, DirectTV and Dish all have/carry the game in HD. FIOS should be doing that same as well. Had I known prior to the install...I most likely would have waited until the playoffs were over to have FIOS installed. I was expecting (and was told by install tech) that we would have 30 additional HD channels by now...and guess what...they all miss-led us and we did not get those channels. FIOS you have to catch up. Two years of this will be unacceptable. At least Standard Definition channels are much much better..that is the only saving grace I can find. (internet and phone are both top notch and I would not trade either for anything at all)
