| So is Americast (Bellsouth Entertainment) Dead?
I haven't received anything here in Gwinnett County in Atlanta, but from reading this (which I think came from Ft.Lauderdale) I am afraid that I will have to switch to Comcast. »/speak/slidesh···aA%3D%3D |

Why not just go for one of the new Dish bundles? |

| reply to Ameri_User Yes I got a letter this week that the service terminates June 23 , Miami Fl. They offered AT&T dish network which I will not use so I have already ordered Comcrap.
Whats the point of a dish when sometime down the road Uverse may be offered and I may want to switch?
AT&T has really done us a disservice. They could at least hang on to Americast until Uverse is rolled out |

None the less I'll probably go to month to month with Dish until the dust settles. Comcast in this area is simply too costly and goes out of service every time someone sneezes.

| I received this reply from Bellsouth Entertainment after I emailed them. Dear Mr. XXXXXX,
Thank you for your email to the new AT&T now joined by BellSouth Entertainment. It is, indeed, correct that we are ending our BellSouth Americast video service as of June 23, 2008, and that there is an offer for all of our current subscribers to transition over to the new AT&T/DISH Network offer.
For some time our customers have been asking for expanded channel selections, HDTV programming, DVR (digital video recording) capabilities and the like, and now out AT&T/DISH offer has all of these. Please feel free to call them at 1-877-800-1662 for information regarding their packages and pricing.
The UVERSE service is still going to be available to most of our customers in the future, but it is currently still only available in very limited areas.
Once again, thank you for your email to the new AT&T now joined by BellSouth Entertainment. We greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us, and we look forward to continuing to serve your home entertainment needs. Have a great day!
Respectfully,
Customer Care AT&T/BellSouth Entertainment, LLC. |

| reply to Ameri_User We got our notice last week in Gwinnett. June 23rd is the end and after emailing the customer service dept. they called and confirmed that the only alternative they will offer is Dish Network. My biggest complaint was what about all your customers who can't get satellite dish reception due to site conflicts? They don't seem to care. I refuse to go to Comcrap! When we first moved into this house they would never show up for installation appointments and that is why we ended up with Bellsouth to begin with. I think we're going to hold out in hopes that some better alternative will come along. |

| reply to Ameri_User How does Bellsouth cable TV work? It sounds like how AOL broadband used to work. And I'm not completely sure how that worked either. If its through one of the dish companies why is the service only available in limited areas?
And why would AT&T change dish companies only to shut the service down a month later? |

Makes me think that they will start working on replacing the video equip with the stuff Uverse is made of. I hope so because the last I heard was that the project to do that was stalled. |

| reply to Ameri_User After I read the letter in Ameri_User's link, I realized I confused Bellsouth and AT&T. So its AT&T that works like AOL broadband?
BTW, when I say like AOL Broadband I mean that AOL didn't have their own DSL service so you had to use someone else who did and pay AOL(Or something like that). Since AT&T doesn't have its own cable TV service (until U-Verse), they got it from a dish company and you have to pay AT&T and they pay the dish company? |

I think what this service is cable television over fiber optics for IFITL customers. These users also get "DSL" service (which is really just an Ethernet link, I believe) and telephone service over IFITL (Integrated Fiber In The Loop)
From what I understand, IFITL is an older technology that isn't really supported much anymore.
It seems like AT&T Southeast/BellSouth has plans to discontinue the cable TV service because the users want more digital content and want HD, which isn't really provided over the current platform...Either that, or it's too expensive or not cost-effective enough for them to continue to provide the TV service.
This information is probably inaccurate...I don't use IFITL and I don't know the inner workings of it.

For the previous posters, no this isn't like the AOL broadband thing because ATT (Formerly Bellsouth) owned and broadcasted over the lines themselves. I believe before the merger, they were looking to upgrade, but now with UVERSE, I'm guessing they will just take out all the Americast stuff and hopefully slowly replace it with UVERSE. Maybe they will finally upgrade IFITL as well, because they already have the infastructure, (Fiber Optic Lines)they just need to upgrade their equipment. |

| To reply to myself with some confirmation...
I heard through the grapevine that they ARE going to start work on getting Uverse to the IFITL neighborhoods and this IS why they are killing off the old bellsouth cable.
They have to replace the equipment in the RT's and will be replacing the ONU's as well. |

»Dish Network = very bad customer service.
IMO Dish is without a doubt as close as one can come to matching the cable companies reputation of lying and missing commitments as possible good job there Dish guys and gals.

| I'm just hoping that they go with a PON upgrade for IFITL users. It seems like it'd be the least inconvenient upgrade path. I mean you have a 10BaseT ethernet link to the home computer. All you'd need to do is lay the fiber drops, set up an ONU NID, set-up the power feed, and voila.
The hard part would be coordinating installs. |
