xxTRAGEDYxx : ok, well, we decided to still go with windstream. so today they come out AGAIN, and try and hook up the phone and internet since they now have "pins" availiable. So when i get home....we don't have anything but phone. I'm not sure of the exact problem but what I get from my wife is that something is wrong with our or the streets phone lines, and it'll be tomorrow before they can get it working. or so they say. we'll see. you know what they say...3 times is a charm!!

anon : That's exactly what I was telling him. When I worked tech support we wouldn't do a whole lot for residential customers running a business. The way I look at it, if you're going to run a business don't save yourself $10 bucks a month and do it on a residential account. There is a good reason business customers pay more: better service, more uptime, etc. I know when customers would call in to me upset because they were trying to run a business on a residential account I wouldn't do jack for them. If your losing "$3500 per day," get a business class account. My advice is if your wife working from home is important, go with the business account. Sure there is software available where she wouldn't have to get a static IP. But, if you like American based tech support, more uptime, issues resolved quicker, callbacks when reps say they'll call you back, etc, go with the business class.

mojo1 : We also have static IP service because my wife works from home. However, it is not because of the static IP, it is because of the support they offer "business" customers which is what it is considered.

When I was on regular residential service and had problems, it would take several days to get it fixed. When I complained, someone at the former US-based support center suggested going with "business class" DSL because the business customers are moved to the front of the line for help when there is a problem.

Also, when I do need to call tech support (haven't had to in about 5 months), I get Level 2 support here in the states. They are great and do everything they can to fix a problem. The last time I had a problem, a tech showed up with a new modem the next morning. I thought they would ship one but that is one of the "perks" of business grade service. It does cost more, but it is really only about $10 more per month (compared to the regualar price).

Since I went to static, the connection has been solid and I have no complaints. Everything they promised would happen has.

No, I don't have to have static IP service, but it seems to make things more reliable. The work my wife does from home is time-sensitive and an outage would really hurt.

anon : It only takes getting the pins and having a tech install them (length of time depends on a manned or unmanned CO). I'd say your really close to the dslam if you can get the 8M/768kbps package. And they will do this for one or one-hundred customers. It makes no difference. They are not a company that shys away from money. I would also call the billing office and make sure the billing doesn't start until you actually get service hooked up. The business office and the internet side don't always seem to be in synch. When you call them ask for the dedicated help desk number (this is tech support for static ip customer). Either call them or have the rep transfer you to dedicated. Give them your info and ask them the status on getting pins in your area. They should be able to take your info and call you once the pins are available. I used to do this all the time for customers but I highly doubt "Sam" in India will do this for you. Good luck!

xxTRAGEDYxx : hey, thnx alot!! my wife is freakin out because they can't hook it up and I had zero idea of what Windstream was talking about in reference to the pins. How hard is it for them to upgrade the DSLAM? sounds complicated, and I doubt they'd do it for just one customer. Also, how can I find out how far I am from the C.O.?? She ordered the 8down 768up package, and I'm curious if we'll even see the advertised speeds considering the possible distance. Thanks alot. And yes, so far, almost everyone I talked to for support(until I asked to speak to supervisors) was not in this country. Thnx again

anon : Basically a pin is where you are wired up for DSL at the DSLAM. When dsl is sold the rep is not able to see if pins are available or not. In a nutshell this means that this piece of equipment can't hold any more subscribers without upgrades. When I used to work for Windstream (when tech support was in the US) it would take a week or so to get the pins installed and you wired up. The good thing about getting a static IP is that you will get to deal with American tech support and they are awesome at helping customers out. Hope this helps and good luck.

xxTRAGEDYxx : Alright, my wife and I have RR. My wife needs a ststic IP in order to work from home. RR only offers a ststic w/business class. The wait is a minimum of 46 days. So, we call Windstream. We were told with zero hesitation that we could have internet and phone service within 7 days. Tuesday, a tech comes out but says he can't install the internet because they do not have any "pins"(not sure if correct spelling) available. I get on the phone with Customer Service and they tell me they don't have any pins and aren't sure when any will be available. I asked to speak with her supervisor. He told me the same, apologized, gave me his direct extension, and told me when we finially get the service he would give us a credit.
Can anyone here explain to me what a pin is?!? Do you think we'll have to wait long? How's the service? And has anyone else had this kind of problem with Windstream? Thanks alot for any and all help!!
