| Charter Prices - How much do you pay? Negotiated prices?
WARNING: This thread is intended for the super deal seekers that don't mind wasting hours on the phone to save a few bucks.
First off I'd like to say I'm a Charter user that subscribes to HSI only, no CATV. I know normally this means I have a $10 fee added to the "base price" but in the past I've been able to negotiate around this. Also I know pricing is supposedly regional, but at the same time I've found with some finagling (and retentions) I have been able to get them to match their own/others prices.
I currently am on a classic 3mbps plan (auto upgraded to 5) for $29.95/month (supposed to be for 1 year, which will be up soon). My total bill is $32.75 w/tax - and remember no CATV here. (I had negotiated this price to match VZ DSL prices)
I would prefer to find another deal that is permanent or at least 1 year in length, as the current promotions on the Charter website are only 6 months.
From reading this forum on and off, it seems some people are reporting getting permanent(?) prices of $30 for 5mbps and $35 for 10mbps. Even a rumor that these prices are available with no CATV? Can anyone confirm these numbers?
Now I see the thread about 16mbps for $5 more than 10mbps... does this mean $40 16mbps is a possibility, anyone tried?
Here's the breakdown of prices as far as I understand them (in my area):
Now the promo 6mo prices are very nice, and I was thinking of trying out the 16mbps for 6months, and possibly transferring to 10mbps for 6months to get back to back promos - anyone tried this?
The reason why I think it may work is due to the fine print: "To be considered a new Charter customer, customer must not have subscribed to Charter High-Speed Internet Max within the previous 30 days" with similar but appropriate wording for 10mbps and 5mbps - apparently switching speed packages qualifies you for a new promo period?
Anyway, thanks for any thoughts/responses. If you currently have a cheap Charter price please post your specific deal (and please include extra detail like if you are a CATV sub also). |

| Do you have other reasonably priced broadband options? For example, could you get DSL if you wanted to?
I don't know if this is the response you're looking for.
I pay $67/mo. for 1.5Mbps/256k. The next package up would've been 3.0Mbps/384k for $104/mo.
- It is through Charter Business. - It's a one year contract, which I started in May 2007. - It's for Internet only, no TV. I don't have cable-phone either, as I use POTS. - I have a static IP. - I have no port blocking of any sort. - My set up fee was $100, which included the modem. - The set up fee included a truck roll. However, all he did was make some cable and tell me some settings. - I could've just as easily bought the cable myself. - They could've mailed me the modem, or I could've gotten one myself. - I should've asked if I could do without the truck roll. I can't remember if I asked about that or not.
I wanted to negotiate, but since I can't get DSL here I'm in no such position. Charter is the only way to get service at a somewhat reasonable price. A T1 would've cost $400/mo.
As far as I know, no WISP covers the area. Even if one did, I live in an apartment and wouldn't be able to install the equipment.
Sprint EV-DO wasn't an option, because as far as I know they don't offer static IP.
Verizon and AT&T don't count, because they're no cheaper than Sprint, and they have 5GB/mo. caps.
Apart from the price, where I'm very unhappy, the actual service has been good.
If I didn't live in a DSL blackhole I'd jump ship. AT&T Static IP DSL is cheaper.
AT&T Static IP DSL, 6.0M/768k, 1yr. - $80/mo. |

Thanks for the response. However I was kind of looking for the cheapest way to get the new 10/1 or 16/2 residential packages.
Just for what it's worth, my IP address with Charter (despite being DHCP) hasn't changed in about a year, and with services like dyndns.org you sure are paying a premium and taking a bandwidth hit just for a static IP in my opinion. |

But if you read the residential T.O.S., my understanding is that no server of any type is allowed.
And...I do run a very small scale E-mail/WWW/FTP server, mainly just for myself.
Even so, it's kind of scary. If you want to include things others are likely to do:
I'm guessing it even includes RDP, which to me doesn't really count but could be considered a server.
It's similar to something like PCAnywhere, but it's a feature that's free in XP Pro and Vista Business (and higher). It only allows one RDP user to log in at a time.
I suppose the T.O.S. could even include BitTorrent, though I personally don't run it.
If it weren't for that thing in the T.O.S., I would've given the Dyndns thing a shot. |

| reply to Jerm I signed up for 5mb/$15/6mo promo.
It rolled over automatically to 29.99 when my 6mo were up.
If it was any higher I would have cancelled and gone back to DSL.
Actually, if they don't fix the cockup they've got going on with wvfiber in TN, I may switch back to DSL anyway.
Just got a promo in the mail for local phone and 6 meg for $40/mo |

| reply to Jerm $69.99 10m + I have to pay $15.99 for basic cable.
I think I'm going to down grade to 5M or call AT&T. I was told last night $69.99 for 10M was the best they will do. |

Wow, that is awesome price for 16meg. Here it is 79.99 a month. Yes I agree - $55/month is about max I would be willing to pay for 16mbps.
However this is also what I HATE about Charter's pricing. markopoleo states essentially his normal price is $40/month for 10mbps and $45 for 16mbps (then add +$10 to each for No CATV). Except when I go to Charter's website and type in an new service request for an address in Bonne Terre MO - the pricing that pulls up is EXACTLY the same as I have here in WA (ie $55+$10 for 5mbps, $60+10 for 10mbps)
So from this I can deduce: Either markopoleo is misinformed about his price OR there may be some chance $55/month for 16mbps IS a possibility in our area too.
I guess I'll just have to deal with retentions. And for those of you like squashpile who have been told "sorry X price is it" - you're probably just talking to the order takers - go through the phone menus to cancel service and then you'll get to the actual people who can do something for you! |

| I sent you a PM but will answer here aswell.
Basically I just do online chat only when upgrading to new service tier. I have NEVER had price quoted from website in my area online, but if i call it I get price that is same online.
My bill has been correct since upgrading to 16meg.
Here is my online chat log from when i upgraded.. You have been connected to CVW Roseanne . CVW Roseanne : Thank you for joining us in Charter Communications Chat. My name is Roseanne. How may I be of help to you today? me: Hello, I was wondering how much 16meg/2meg costs in my area, 63628 me: It just came available here CVW Roseanne : I can certainly check on that price for the 16Meg. me: Do you want me address, security code stuff? CVW Roseanne : May I please have your complete service address including the zip code?
CVW Roseanne : i have your account up. CVW Roseanne : The cost would be $29.99 plus $25 for the 16 Meg. me: So $55 a month for it? me: Isn't that what 10meg costs now? CVW Roseanne : 10meg is $29.99 plus the $5 on a promotion. me: Mmm my last bill was $52.20 me: for 10meg me: oh, does that include bundling or not? me: Basicly what im asking is if i sign up for 16meg today, but bill next month would be $55 exactly? Plus some change for tax or whatever me: Sorry for all the questions at once, I just have problems with charter billing everytime i change something. CVW Roseanne : The $54.99 would not include the taxes. me: SO it would be $54.99 a month for HSI only, NO bundling correct? CVW Roseanne : That is correct. me: Could I get it upgraded now? CVW Roseanne : I can certainly upgrade you to that now. CVW Roseanne : Would you like me to do that? me: yes please CVW Roseanne : I have added that to your account. me: Just have to reset my modem now? CVW Roseanne : yes me: ok thank you very much CVW Roseanne : Is there anything else I can help you with today? me Nope, you been more than helpfull. thank you CVW Roseanne : Thank you for choosing Charter |

| So I just did the "Online Chat" with four different reps, and it looks like markopoleo is right: The "Chat" price can be different from the online regular price.
For example, regular price on 10mbps in my area according to chat is $49.99 + $10 No CATV fee. Website "regular price" after the promo is $59.99 + $10 no CATV fee.
However, one thing I was unable to get past was - for promotional prices - the length of the promotion.
It seems if you have HSI only, the promotion will only last 6months maximum. I was hoping for 12months - but that is only available if you bundle and have more than 1 service.
----
Another interesting change seems to be the promotional prices - when you order a promotion from a chat person it seems to always be $10 higher than the price advertised on the web.
Damn Charter and their super-confusing prices! |
