Boomerang86 : I bought a used car from a NJ dealer in 1991; they gave me a thirty day temporary, non resident tag to stick in the back window for the drive home. You just need to show proof of insurance. Back home, stand in line at the DMV with your bill of sale and FS-20s; pay the sales tax, title, tag and registration fees and you're good to go. The sales tax will be based on your residential address of record.

I wouldn't wait the full thirty days to get tags once you get back to NY, however.
--
Don't pay ME back, pay it forward.

Tomek : I bought a car from PA and they offer temporary license plates so you can use them for like 30-days till you register.
Don't pay PA tax, just when you register they will include Tax at your local DMV. If the dealer wants to tax you then something is wrong.
If you can't get temporary license plate from PA dealer, then according to DMV, bring bill of sale to them, they will issue you the plates, slap them on the car in PA and then drive back. MN doesn't offer temporary plates, so I used my other cars plates (Illegal) to drive back to NYC. I drove subaru on audi plates.
--
Semper Fi

golden eagle : Not complicated at all. I purchased a car in NJ a couple of years back. The process went like so:
1)Paid for car without sales tax at the time of the sale.
2)Took bill of sale to DMV at the time of registration and paid for sales tax then.

Nowadays you may be able to skip the trip to the DMV and pay the appropriate tax to the dealer.
--
Support U.S. Troops.

fartness : I live in Upstate NY if that makes a difference with the downstate DMV, but what happens with tax and everything if I buy a car outside of NY? Do I get double taxed, or just pay the difference (ie. PA is 6% and NY is 8%, so pay 6% to PA and 2% to NY)...

Will I lose in the deal because of any extra fees I have to pay to our lovely government because I bought it outside of NY?

Is it all complicated, or should I just stick to buying a car in NY?

Thanks.
