I saw that in an email from ARRL today. I sure wish they could get the bugs worked out for BPL, would be a nice alternative here in the sticks.

Yech, if the providers wouldnt cherry pick like they do now... I wonder what makes anybody think they'd come out to the sticks with it? I can say that, living in the sticks myself.

This is just my humble opinion but I do not think the electric utilities while touting BPL as an access method that will deliver Broadband to the sticks internally see BPL as such.

What follows is my two cents on this is. To begin with the only reason Broadband doesn’t make it out to the sticks is density. Projected BB profits are based on the number of home passed per mile divided by the take rate and the only way to increase those profits are by increasing the number of homes passed per mile or offering multi-play services which can increase take rate.

Well out in the sticks one cannot practically increase the number of homes passed per mile and I doubt BPL will ever have the bandwidth to do video over IP so there will be no CATV like offerings and that knocks them down to a one or two play service so the profitability is lowered as is the possibility of deployment in areas of low density.

So why tout it as a solution for rural BB because that is an underserved market that most will not touch and claiming one has a BB solution for that market can bring a lot of community support behind one when it comes time to go before the regulators.

None of this will really matter in the long run; Wall Street will kill BPL. Building out the infrastructure to support BPL in the sticks will be prohibitively expensive when compared with the revenue it will generate so investors simply will not fund the utilities. In the cities, you will have lots of competing providers installing fiber to the curb (or home), or upgrading cable speeds with DOCSIS 3.0.

If you can't make money with BPL (and you can't) it will die a slow and painful death.

Personally while I do not believe BPL will be widely deployed as a Broadband solution I do believe it will be used as a supplement to or replacement of the existing substation based PLC load control and management systems already deployed and with the higher data rates of BPL it does make a good platform for remote control, data acquisition, meter reading and tamper prevention.

Pardon the pun but with skyrocketing fuel costs electric utilities are hot for remote real time meter reading and energy theft prevention and while PLC doesn’t have the bandwidth BPL fits the bill for that task and considering their only other alternatives are to build a wireless network, lease a wireless network or lease a landline connection none of which are cost effective for them while BPL on the surface appears to be their least cost method of getting there and if used internally is for the most part an un-licensed and un-regulated system and if managed properly keeps the money flowing from one pocket in the company to another while writing off the cost to lease bandwidth from themselves on one side of the house and doing the same with the loss’s of deploying and maintaining the network on the other side of the house.
