I went in one day and saw most of the tellers and others out from behind the counter wearing T-shirts and Levis, pushing the new ATM-only concept. All your transactions that you can do at an ATM are free, and you only need to pay a "small" fee to see a teller for a transaction you could do at the ATM. I looked several of these people right in their eyes and told them they were promoting themselves right out of a job. They, of course, didn't see that and did as they were told. A few weeks later, I returned to find half the staff gone due to layoffs.
So I fought back. My ATM withdrawal limit at the time was $200 per day, so I would go into the bank and withdraw $220, or $195, or even $50 (you had to do things at the ATM in $20 increments at the time) . The charges would come through on my statement and I would fight them. They would say I could do these at ATMs, and I would say prove it. They would say pull 200 instead of 195. Nope. They would say you can pull 200 on one day and 20 the next for your 220. Sorry, not interested. Bottom line, they pushed that ANY transaction I could not do at the ATM was free inside the bank. I held them to it for years. It was fun to mess with them.
What I'm getting at here is we need to find any possible way to fight these fees using their rules against them. -- There is not a man in the country that can't make a living for himself and family. But he can't make a living for them AND his government, the way his government is living. What the government has got to do is live as cheap as the people. - Will Rogers |
