AVG 8.0 Web Shield necessary?

I have AVG 8.0 Pro Edition. It comes with Web Shield but I didn't install it fearing it may slow down my surfing. Would you recommend it or it's redundant if I have these running already? Thanks!

Kerio Firewall
Spybot
SpywareBlaster
AVG 8.0 Pro

you don't need web shield, especially as it slows down browsing, your AV is still protecting your comp just as well

Cudini,

This question comes up repeatedly. The well meaning give answers like yours. However, there is no explanation as to why a web shield is needed or not.

There have been several exploits of Internet Explorer such as the windows metafile that a web shield would prevent. However, its difficult to get an answer as to whether a web shield prevents anything from happening to Firefox. For example, what gets written to disk and what does not, before FF trys to parse it? What other measures such as LUA/SRP or HIPS would be effective?

i don't see the benefit in the web shield as the real time av component should and will tackle anything that gets downloaded wherever on the comp, including FF cache location.

I use Firefox. Does it make any difference if I don't use Web Shield?

As diver 196 notes, this has been discussed before with both sides of the issue having points worth noting. My perspective is that an HTTP scanner in an AV is one more layer of protection. And personally, I'm a big believer in layers. So with my NOD32, I leave mine on. If I was running AVG 8, I'd run it there too.

FWIW, cerdan... if the version of Kerio you are running does not actively scan HTTP, then nothing else is either as the other programs cannot do so.

Does the Web Shield slow you down at all? Is it a major system resource hog?

No one can say whether it will slow *you* down. Systems vary. I use Avast and have it's web shield running with no issues or slow downs at all.

You'll have to try it on your machine and see what happens. If it does slow down your surfing, you'll have to make the judgement call as to whether it slows you down enough to want to disable it.

The HTTP scanner is part of the main NOD32 AV program itself, so it's not an additional process. So no, it makes no visible impact on the system. If AVG is similar, then I wouldn't think it would hurt anything.

As for speeds, I don't notice it. At home, I'm on dial-up so I know it's not the limiting factor there. At work, I'm on a dedicated T-1 (rated as 1.5M) and I see consistent download speeds of 1.4 to 1.44M. Is NOD the slight drop? Maybe but IMO, I don't think so.
