How to increase router speed from laptop?

anon : Well Im not really an expert in this area, but when I downloaded a torrent at my friends house using my laptop and my wi-fi connection to his router(which is a belkin router) it said on my laptop that it had a speed of 54mbs, but when I went home and I checked the connection speed it was only 11mbs and I have a Linksys-B router. Is this beacause the brand of the router why his is faster than mine or do I have to modify somehow my router at home? I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks.
