Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

I just got through installing 8.0 on 3 computers. 1 Vista desktop, 1 XPsp2 Laptop and 1 XPsp1 desktop.

Not only did it TURN ON Windows Firewall on all 3 updated systems (it was previously disabled), but my network is in shambles. The two XP machines can't "see" each other or any other systems on the network, only one can can see the printer connected to one of my Visa desktops, and my 2 Vista machines can't see each other either. Believe me, I'd LOVE to blame this on something else, but the only thing I've done today was update 3 of my 6 machines to AVG 8.0, and I guess I WON'T be doing the same to the last 3 anytime soon.

Vista networking is fickle to begin with so maybe it can shoulder some of the blame here, but there is definitely something wrong with this update.

Laptop = PC Tools AntiVirus
PC#1 = Avira
PC#2 = Avast

All formerly AVG 7.5 and all now purring along without the slightest hiccup or slowdown. Bye bye AVG...who needs this sort of hassle?

I had "custom" installed 8 as per others

Thought it was not bad..but few days ago some issues on connections was getting some hiccups.

Completely got 8 off and run Avast free.
WOW..what a treat.
Works for me.

I did try

You just shouldn't have to "configure" and play with an app like that.

If they were wanting to remove their free users and loosen up server use....they sure have succeeded.

Uninstall AVG 8 completely!

Try this, reinstall AVG 8, restart, you'll be asked whether to install AVG toolbar, select YES, then you follow dialogs box until it's finished. Use Add/Remove programs, choose remove, follow every instruction, then choose remove AVG 8. This should do it, remove AVG 8 completely! Good luck!

I run mine on auto at about 3 am so I have no idea how long it takes. I'll have to check my log but I don't care as it's time I'm not on.

Tried to upgrade AVG 8.0 on P4, 512MB DDR1, on a WinXP SP2. Works fine, if run alone. When office users open their applications like Word, Firefox or IE7, etc. It really slows down the system.

Upgrade additional 512MB to make the system RAM 1GB. All 20 P4 that runs AVG8.0 runs smoothly now.

I had 40 PC left with AVG7.5 with same specs, and I'm not upgrading to v8.0.

Just add additional memory for your P4, or go for a PC with a higher spec. I've been an AVG user for quite sometime now, but I know this is coming.

This probably has been brought up before, but I believe the 12/31/2008 end of support date, is for AVG anti-spyware, not the AV.
This is straight from the AVG free FAQs:
1350:Support of AVG version 7.5AVG 7.5 will be supported until December 31, 2008. The support includes:

releases of new Virus Base updates, ensuring identical signature-based detection with AVG 8.0
releases of new program updates, fixing known or newly found problems in the program
technical and sales support for AVG 7.5
Please note that if you wish to keep using AVG 7.5 after release of AVG 8.0, you need to use the correct License Number for this version. This number was provided to you upon purchase or registration of AVG and starts with '70' or '75'. In case you purchased or renewed AVG 7.5 license after the release of AVG 8.0 and you received License Number for AVG 8.0, you may need to contact our sales support to receive a License Number for AVG 7.5.

The latest installation files of AVG 7.5 are available at our website.

As it says, they will continue support for AVG free 7.5 until 12/31/2008. I guess they just haven't done anything to update or remove the nag screen.

I think that's from the FAQ for the paid version of AVG. However, you are correct that the free version of 7.5 will be supported with definition updates until the end of the year.

For now, I would stay with AVG 7.5 as long as possible, or switch to a different free product such as Avira or Avast.

Have Avira and Avast running on my two PCs with no regrets so far.

I am having the same issue. With an external HD, it is taking about 11 hrs to scan both HD's. That is insane. I start at 1:00 am and it ends around 1:00 pm. What can be done about this? Any ideas?
Thanks
Mike

Does the new version work with FAT32 systems? (W2K SP4 on FAT 32).

There is no clear indication about this. Updates and scanning were not working on FAT 32 systems in the first version.

Turned off link scanner (gimmicky!) and resident (evil) shield so far.. The resident shield meant opening large files like movies took up to a minute while avg inspected them. Didn't used to happen with 7.5.

Oh and the annoying 'MS-windows-style-update-manager-icon' with a big red exclamation mark if you disable anything - hi fallootin' nonsense!!!

Bad work gri-soft. I used to be so full of praise for AVG. Keep it real!!!!

If you're using the latest install, try looking in the Advanced Settings. There you'll find Ignore Faulty Conditions where you can make the red exclamation mark go away for each component you decide to disable
