| reply to Dagda1175 Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?
I installed and have been very disappointed with AVG8. I have been using it for years and loved AVG for the reason that it wasn't a full blown scan everything and slow my system to a crawl type of scanner like Norton and McAfee.
I switched for this reason. I had a great running system where I could game, work on Video, graphics, etc. and the scanner not interfere. Now with AVG8 I'm feeling just like I have Norton or McAfee installed. I will be changing soon, too bad we can't go back to 7.5, loved it! This thing is sluggish to say the least! |

It updates fine and should be good until December. After that, maybe they will get the kinks out of 8.x. -- If America has an official philosophy, it surely includes the belief in individualism, competition, private property, democracy, freedom, and a deep faith in education. | reply to ethics There are many reasons why it is slow. #1 this program is bloated like other combo programs i.e. Norton. It does not come set up in its default install mode to run properly. One other post said his scan time went from 4 hrs to 17. The most likely reason is because AVG 8 does not default to fast scan. There is a slider bar and it is set in the middle. Plus there are so many other thngs to configure. They don't have "global" configurations. You can configure each little part even in the free version. That is good and bad. Bad for newbies because it makes everything worse by a long shot. This program needs big time work. I have been using it on workstations and servers and am very disappointed. There is no one size fits all check for everything. Is the person at work for 5 hours muddling around and does little work better than the person there for and hour that goes flat out and gets it done? Again spyware and virus scanning running together is not good. How could AVG have such a great product in ver. 7.5 and go to 8? If you look at the tools and advanced menu you can experiment with unchecking certain boxes. You have to be careful but for instance "Scan Potentially Unwanted Programs and Spyware Threats" is worthless as far as I am concerned. It adds massively to scan time with little payback. Also AVG 8 has many false positivse in active X controls from microsoft for example. |

I used version 8 for around 2 days and finally got fed up with it and returned to 7.5 figuring i'd have to find another antivirus by the end of the month...but if this is true and 7.5 will continue to be supported until december i'd be staying put with avg. Can anybody confirm that 7.5 will continue updating until december??? |

Can anybody confirm that 7.5 will continue updating until december??? I only upgraded to 8.0 because of the pop-up warning said my subscription expired May 31, 2008. Needless to say, after using 8.0 a week or two, I went back (should I say ran back!) to reinstalling 7.5, and now interestingly enough, the pop up warnings are no more!
Still concerned, I went into Security Status in my reinstalled 7.5, scrolled down to the license and it thankfully says:
"Your license will expire on 12/1/2008. When renewal is due, please visit www.grisoft.com to purchase your license renewal at a discounted price".
Not sure if reinstalling extended the license, or Grisoft changed their mind about May 31th. I'm also not sure what to expect at the end of the year, can I renew my 7.5 or will they force me to "upgrade" to 8.x? Whatever the case, if 8.0 is anything remotely like it is now come seven months, I'll be switching to something else...! No way is 8.0 going back on my system! |

| reply to Dagda1175 Oh thank God I found this forum. I thought it was just me having problems with AVG 8.0! It took me ages to figure out that the link scanner was slowing everything down to dial-up proportions. I uninstalled it and re-installed it again to see if there was an option not to load the link scanner at all (there isn't), and the only other option was to have that accusing exclamation mark staring at me from the taskbar if I disabled it!
Luckily I kept the installation for 7.5 and went straight back to that and now there's no more crawling to a halt! Would like to stop the incessant pop ups to upgrade though! |

2 edits | reply to Dagda1175 I've installed, 4 copies of AVG 8.0 (using the mentioned safesurf/safesearch removed option..
4 systems.
950 mhz 1.2 Ghz 1.8 Ghz 1.76 Ghz
EDIT: Fixed my ooops, meant Ghz not Mhz...
3 with 768mb of ram 1 with 512 (the 950) mb of ram.
Results?
No slowdowns, no more then AVG 7.5
In fact I found that it is a bit faster on the email portion. (yes I use Outlook as my reader) and, its not causing the "chug" that 7.5 would do on load up.
Thing to note, on my system I have 8 email addresses configured to poll and its not slow.
I also like the fact that they removed the "Outgoing" mail and that they finally realised that forcing a DAILY scan was a bit much and to allow you to configure it to be one WEEKLY scan instead.
Daily was a bit much, I do like a full scan once a week though.
I don't mind the daily update, for the 2 minutes or whatever it takes on boot up I enjoy the knowledge its updated.
My big pet peeve? Sometimes it does not DO IT on startup but waits for YOU to start doing something net related (and I have my net connection up 24/7) before it will update.
Overall? So far impressed, its not bad. |

@emc.com | reply to LadyL Its not the SCAN that is slow, its the entire PC usuage after installation. The AVG works amazingly well, but nothing else gets by with the serious speed reduction. |

| reply to Dagda1175 So glad I found this thread! AVG8 totally crippled both my desktop and laptop after upgrading from 7.5.
I was tearing my hair out as to what the problem was. Both machines slowed to a crawl and browsing was either akin to dial-up or pages failed to load at all.
After years of solid AVG use, it was the LAST prog I expected to be causing problems. I even made a number of calls to my ISP enquiring about service outages etc - they were as stumped as I was!
I eventually put 2 and 2 together (both machines had been fine pre-update), found this thread and removed AVG 8 from both (also performed a sys restore). Both machines now back to their best.
VERY disappointed with AVG, but relieved to have the problem sorted after 24 hours of PC hell :-(
Thanks again to all posters. |

1 edit | reply to Dagda1175 If you've already got AVG Free v8.0 installed and are encountering problems or find that it's slowing down your machine, try the following:
1. Download a fresh copy of the installer, saving it to your C: drive (i.e, C:\avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe) =>
[Mod Note: File removed! »Posting Rules - Security ]
2. Uninstall AVG 8.0 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.
NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've got AVG 8.0 installed, properly configured, and updated!
3. Carefully follow these instructions to (re)install AVG 8.0: »free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338
Tip: Do NOT install the toolbar (if offered) or either of the email scanners. Email Scanning provides no additional protection, it's a major source of corruption and problems in Outlook Express/Windows Mail, and even Symantec(NAV) says it's not necessary: quote: Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.

| reply to Dagda1175 First of all everyone may have a different experience because you all have different computers, so I can only speak for mine, Its not always fair to blame AVG 8 for all your problems. I recently did a Clean Install of Xp Pro with Sp3 slipstreamed. I run a Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz 2gigs ram. My system runs 0-2 cpu usage,(Have about 31 processes running)The only thing I have running down by my clock is Commodo Firewall Pro 2.4) not even breathing hard, You want real slow downs try NORTON.
I too uninstalled AVG 8 went back to 7.5 but then I got the nag that support would end May 31, so I went back to 8. I have been running it for a while now with no issues.
To simplify things for people who do not like to tweak, why not just Disable Link Scanner within the program after install??? easy to do, then go into your browser...Firefox its an ad-on and disable AVG safe search. In IE go to manage ad-ons & disable it. I also disabled Auto anything. I did not install mine with email scanner , I do not use Outlook, why not let someone else handle all the problems like Gmail etc. You can also disable the tray Icon by going into Msconfig.
I too have tried other free solutions but I keep coming back to old reliable AVG, its been around long enough to be trust worthy. I did find some false positives when scanning but that was because I have Spybot S&D with immunization turned on. You have to stop & think for a minute, the reason it may take a bit longer on some machines is it now scans for a lot more problems than in 7.5.
The bottom line here is we should not be so quick to condemn AVG 8 they are providing an excellent FREE service,& its only the first version out of beta, give them a chance, Look how many program updates there were for previous versions of AVG. I run Windows Defender & Spybot S&D so I did not really what more spyware protection but I can live with it,as I do not have to pay for definition updates every year. |

Hopefully in future releases AVG will give us the choice of what we install, I would like to see just a plain vanilla AntiVirus again in version 8. Maybe feedback to AVG would be more productive than complaining here. I think they will have to do something because the paid version is how they make their bread & butter,so if not many people buy version 8 pro because of all these issues it will send them a clear message. If you think about it you only get major slow downs if you are actually running out of ram & start using the page file. I have my scan speed slider default at Fast. |
