This has been an interesting topic! I've kept 7.5 and noticed today that I received updates for Jun 2 2008. I suspect that the issues with 8.0 have led to an undocumented extension of the end date for AVG free 7.5.

Nope, 12-31-2008 isn't undocumented as being the end date for 7.5 support.

It's been 12/31/08 at least since 5/5/08.

Thanks guys, for clearing that up - Based on the previous posts I'd erroneously assumed 1 May as the cutoff and hadn't seen any new notices.

Sounds like I still have 6 months and a chance to see a lighter version. My commercial AVG customer will also remain at 7.5.

Of course it is different for everyone with the multitude of computers out there and I respect your opinion but this is the bottom line. Its all about speed and efficiency. We don't have time to wait or to try to run a crippled system while it scans for what ever the AVG braintrusts have decided they needed now. Well they were wrong. Yes, there have been improvements and one I am hoping for is the need for rebooting after updating. Maybe any of us can reboot our p.c.'s 50 times a day or reformat but when you are running a server that is NOT an option. I run avg free and paid networked editions. The free or paid is NOT configured to run efficiently out of the box. I have done tests on many p.c's and have experimented with different configs and slider settings and even though I assume the idea was noble to try to minimize resource use but it fails. Effectively I do not use avg for anything with spyware, that is what I am able to configure anyway and now I am fairly happy. I cut very little slack because these guys are getting big bucks from me for the networked edition. The product must work with me not against me and my systems. This is not Walmart take it or leave it. Avg tried to bully us by saying May was it, but obviously after all the problems and posts they changed for a little while. Software companies assume "not as good as they want" performance when shipped knowingly keeping developers noses to the grindstone for the next "patch" subsequently the populace has become too forgiving. I guess some would be forgiving but not me. When the network is down because of a software "glitch" and the boss is screaming I don't want to tell him the system crashed because of software because he doesn't care.

I was just at the AVG Free web site,& noticed there is a new version 8 out as of May 22..the annoying thing is, AVG does not list the full version # in their About info tab within the program, really how hard would that be.

New version is 8.100a1315

»free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe#tba2

I will give it a test see if anything has changed, I was using 8.100a1295 before. FileHippo does not even have this yet.

Thank you for confirming my POST...I was going to post a nice picture of the Nag Notification as well but I did not have a screen grabber handy.

I tried out the new version 8.100a1315 & sure enough they made some changes to the install,(as I said in my earlier posts) you can now uncheck AVG Search Shield. Its running great on my system. It scanned 3 hard drives in 14min.16sec.,I have it set to scan everything not just infectable files.I tried it with infectable files only & that ran around 11min. 54sec.

Not going to waste my time going back to 7.5, it can only get better from here (hopefully).

I have been using Grisoft's AVG anti-virus, FREE edition, for over 6 years. It has worked flawlessly... until version 8. I have 3 computers, one with WinXP Media Center-SP2, one with WinXP Pro-SP2, and one with Win Vista ultimate. My fastest machine is an HP Pavilion with 2 GB of RAM, a 7200 rpm SATA HD, and an AMD Turion 64 x2 processor. I have TWT Roadrunner broadband with about 5.5 Mbps download.

I used to fly.... now I crawl. It feels like I'm on dial up again while browsing the web. When I close FireFox, there are still threads running on the machine. I'm using 110 GB of space on my drive and it now took about 6 hours to complete a scan. THIS VERSION IS A RESOURCE HOG! I hope Grisoft gets the message and does something about it.

Looks like the version now available is 8_100a1323, not 1315 - am I missing something ?

Just did a standard uninstall / install using 8_100a1323( w/o Linkscanner, Email, or Office add-ons checked ) - NOT a command line install - and all went OK - did a fast scan which was the same as before - it appears that unchecking the LinkScanner box gives a good install, but the "advanced" LinkScanner GUI still has a check in the "enable search shield box" which I removed.

AFAIK, only change was the fixed option to unselect LinkScanner.

Wisdom-soft's Screen hunter free is a nice quick loading still image capture program.

Nice things about membership - you can edit your posts to add that screen shot, send IMs to others if you have questions or information you don't want to post in the topic and track or get notifications when somebody responds to a request or post you made or are interested in. Betraying the contents of IMs in posts is looked on very darkly here, and you rarely if ever see it. As an anon user, anybody can pick up the handle used and post as "cavt". With registered users, your screen name is unique and can't be used by other registered users.

I've found all of these to be useful when giving or seeking assistance.

Also, I've never been spammed as a result of my membership. You can bet this bunch would be raising the proverbial roof if that were to happen

I've been using AVG Free on a W98 box for years, and AVG V7.5 Pro on 3 systems, 2x XP Home, 1 XP Pro for years...
When my wife got a Dell laptop with Vista Home Premimum, which came with a year free Trend, after the first Windows Update, about an hour after receiving the laptop, Trend stopped loading correctly, and wouldn't update, or Remove properly. I eventually had to manually remove it, which was a pain because it had enough of it running so as to prevent manual removal, and not enough of it running to un-install. Took about 4 hours of deleting/restarting/deleting/restarting, etc. This was a couple weeks before SP1, and I was new to Wireless, too, which made the whole experience more painful... Eventually, I went to AVG and installed V8 Demo full package based upon my Prior excellent history with AVG.

Install was flawless, and I didn't notice any slowdown, and I continued to configure the laptop for the system here...

About that time I ran into a wierd printer problem with my HP Deskjet 7310 (configured as a Network printer). Laserjet 4+, (also a network printer).
Both configured fine, and printed out test pages.
However, the 7310 would not print out in IEV7. Would work on every program I had in Vista EXCEPT IEV7. LJ4+ Worked fine, so I figured it was an HP issue. You can read on the Microsoft forum on this, showing how far this got... Calls to HP, Dell, Microsoft. A real Circle Jerk!
Eventually, on my own, by accident, I found that AVG was causing the entire issue, only to find that others had posted same results in that forum post.

OVERALL: I will say that I DID NOT Notice a Slowdown with AVG V8.

But since it disabled my printer.... It's HISTORY...

I'll have to take a wait and See approach when it comes to the V7.5 Pro licences that I own.... They (on XP Home & Pro) have been working smoothly, and work fine in XP using 7310 network printer.... For Years.
I've got 2 that expire in 2009, and one that expires in 2010. The W98 system is pretty much offline now, being used for DVR & Router diagnostics and upgrading, and this will probably remain As-Is.

However,on the Wife's Laptop, Vista Home Premium, I CANNOT run AVG V8, as it disables my HP 7310 netork printer (But not the LJ4+ Network printer--Go figure) printing from IEV7 (unless you disable Protected Mode)..... It's running Avast now, and I'll probably get a single license for Avast, and worry about the AVG Pro licenses that expire in 2009.

I'm a bit upset by this, but I'm also willing to take a "Take & See" approach....

Hopefully AVG monitors these threads..... and can react to it!!!

Disk I/O by AVG 8.0 is horrendous. My desktop takes much longer to complete startup as all the i/o is contending with other startup programs. Once this is complete, things settle down but I'm surprised at how bad this is on a 3.2GHz w/ 2 GB or ram.

Thanks for the tip, I will check it out. I would tend to agree with you about memberships, I belong to other forums,& it is a much better way to go, (Just did not have the time),I just wanted to quickly share my experiences with others. You can also tell by the Posts who is serious etc, also if someone else used Cavt..the IP would be different than mine as well.

I just want to give everyone here an update.. I have tested out the new version of AVG 8 & sure enough there is now an option to not install AVG active search shield.Bravo AVG.I recently bought Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1,& installed it on a second hard drive,I am running AVG 8 on it as well with NO Problems. My Vista experience Index is 5.3 Most is 5.9,5.6 etc. & I have Aero Glass on.

I would like to share a Feedback letter I sent to AVG...

I run Xp Pro Sp3,

I am an advanced, experienced computer user, & I would just like to give you some feed back on AVG 8 anti virus.I am using your latest version 8.100a1323 Free.
First of all could you please change the about AVG info within the program to display the actual full version # it never lists the a1323 build #.just 8.100.the other annoying thing is when you turn off Auto scan,Auto update, the tray Icon is in an error state, there is no need for this as the person knows he has turned it off.AFG 8 also does not remember its window position as 7.5 did.
I have used AVG 7.5 for a long time & think it is a great program, with version 8 could you please also give us the option to not install the spy ware part of it, I just want a plain vanilla Anti virus.
People on some Forums have mentioned how resource intensive your new program is as compared to 7.5. I can not complain because it is a free program, but if you give people total customizable options more people may want to buy your product. If you can please trim it down. I run Windows Defender & Spybot S&D,I use a Router & Software Firewall. I like a lot of people do not need more spy ware protection.
In closing I would just like to thank you very much for providing such a great FREE service over the years.I will continue to use your Free version 8 & wait for possible improvements to the program.
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated thank you.

I could not find a feedback area,so could you please pass this on to the actual people who work on the program. Thanks.

Hopefully they will send a reply, or just further improve the program.

My system:Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz,2gigs Corsair ram 667,ATI Sapphire HD 2600XT 512mb DDR3 Direct X10 compatible.Western Digital Sata Hard Drives 16mb Cache. Asus Workstation Motherboard.

This probably has been brought up before, but I believe the 12/31/2008 end of support date, is for AVG anti-spyware, not the AV.
