Vorg : Be nice if they started providing support for software that is already out there. The Linux program VDR has a plugin called IPTV which uses scripts to connect to streams and load the proper player making it very flexible. mythTV has built in support for the network atsc tuner HDHomerun and shouldn't be that hard to expand support to other streamed video. The main thing that is needed is some kind of standardized interface to handle the menus of the services for the VOD stuff. There is a group working on standards for IPTV, but I think that is just the stream and connecting formats.

greeder : Update!

Well, somewhere on this forum, I posted a comprehensive list and review of several TVoIP web sites and Applications. As I said above, Joost is becoming my favorite. Miro is also looking like a worthy application too, But it wants to download everything to your hard drive. There are advantages and disadvantages to that (Need a larger hard drive, for one.)

Anyway...
I finally overcame some technical difficulties and I have the TV in the living room hooked up to a computer. I'm using an S-video to RCA cable connected to the ATI S-video output. A better solution (for those who can afford it) would be to just get a big 32" Flatscreen monitor. Slap a Terrestrial DTV tuner card into the computer (to get local channels) and go from there. But I'm too broke for that.

For software, I loaded Joost on the computer and set it to play full screen on the 2nd monitor (which is the TV). Seems to work. I found the control to switch off adult content, so that solves the problem with the kids. The only problem is that the low resolution of the TV makes it impossible to read the Joost on-screen controls. I'll have to mention that to the Joost people.

I would have to say that we have achieved a modicum of success.

With that, I think I'll catch up on some back episodes of Jericho...

greeder : Ok,
I've got Joost up and running. I'm enjoying the Star Trek reruns. I'm a bit annoyed with Joost tho, There is some content there that I wouldn't be happy if my kids saw it. And then there isn't much content for kids (cartoons etc).

I've also signed up with Hulu. I haven't explored much over there. but I see that there seem to be more clips than actual full length shows.

I have also loaded up JLC's Internet TV viewer. It's OK, but the channels don't always work.

Those, plus a bunch of bookmarks in my web browser, and I'm getting some pretty complete coverage. I've got much more than the 99 cable channels I was getting before.

I feel confident enough about this experiment that I went out today and picked up a used Athalon 2500 system with a video out for the TV.

I'll keep you posted.

greeder : Thanks LH.

At this point I'm going to load up MPC with FFD show codecs and JLC's InternetTV 1.1.0 along with the Joost player.

One problem that I'm finding is that several of these programs/websites don't seem to offer enough domestic content or are heavy on the indi content (and some of that content is not suitable for family). There as also lack of network content.
