I then did a full system backup, along with some duplicate music files and personal documents. I also have several MS system state backups. I jumped from about 800K objects to 1139K objects. The scan time changed from 3 hours to 8 hours using the AVG-Free 8; I start it a 5am. It does not always like the huge backup files at all, and hangs for hours there. During the day, when the scan is not running, avgrsx.exe pumps the cpu to 100% usage and brings the screens to a halt for minutes at a time. It also seems to not like the current Flash player in IE7.
Jan Janowski : I've been using AVG Free on a W98 box for years, and AVG V7.5 Pro on 3 systems, 2x XP Home, 1 XP Pro for years...
When my wife got a Dell laptop with Vista Home Premimum, which came with a year free Trend, after the first Windows Update, about an hour after receiving the laptop, Trend stopped loading correctly, and wouldn't update, or Remove properly. I eventually had to manually remove it, which was a pain because it had enough of it running so as to prevent manual removal, and not enough of it running to un-install. Took about 4 hours of deleting/restarting/deleting/restarting, etc. This was a couple weeks before SP1, and I was new to Wireless, too, which made the whole experience more painful... Eventually, I went to AVG and installed V8 Demo full package based upon my Prior excellent history with AVG.

Install was flawless, and I didn't notice any slowdown, and I continued to configure the laptop for the system here...

About that time I ran into a wierd printer problem with my HP Deskjet 7310 (configured as a Network printer). Laserjet 4+, (also a network printer).
Both configured fine, and printed out test pages.
However, the 7310 would not print out in IEV7. Would work on every program I had in Vista EXCEPT IEV7. LJ4+ Worked fine, so I figured it was an HP issue. You can read on the Microsoft forum on this, showing how far this got... Calls to HP, Dell, Microsoft. A real Circle Jerk!
Eventually, on my own, by accident, I found that AVG was causing the entire issue, only to find that others had posted same results in that forum post.

OVERALL: I will say that I DID NOT Notice a Slowdown with AVG V8.

But since it disabled my printer.... It's HISTORY...

I'll have to take a wait and See approach when it comes to the V7.5 Pro licences that I own.... They (on XP Home & Pro) have been working smoothly, and work fine in XP using 7310 network printer.... For Years.
I've got 2 that expire in 2009, and one that expires in 2010. The W98 system is pretty much offline now, being used for DVR & Router diagnostics and upgrading, and this will probably remain As-Is.

However,on the Wife's Laptop, Vista Home Premium, I CANNOT run AVG V8, as it disables my HP 7310 netork printer (But not the LJ4+ Network printer--Go figure) printing from IEV7 (unless you disable Protected Mode)..... It's running Avast now, and I'll probably get a single license for Avast, and worry about the AVG Pro licenses that expire in 2009.

I'm a bit upset by this, but I'm also willing to take a "Take & See" approach....

Hopefully AVG monitors these threads..... and can react to it!!!
--
Looking for 1939 Indian Motocycle

Its all about speed and efficiency. We don't have time to wait or to try to run a crippled system while it scans for what ever the AVG braintrusts have decided they needed now. Well they were wrong. Yes, there have been improvements and one I am hoping for is the need for rebooting after updating. Maybe any of us can reboot our p.c.'s 50 times a day or reformat but when you are running a server that is NOT an option. I run avg free and paid networked editions. The free or paid is NOT configured to run efficiently out of the box. I have done tests on many p.c's and have experimented with different configs and slider settings and even though I assume the idea was noble to try to minimize resource use but it fails. Effectively I do not use avg for anything with spyware, that is what I am able to configure anyway and now I am fairly happy. I cut very little slack because these guys are getting big bucks from me for the networked edition. The product must work with me not against me and my systems. This is not Walmart take it or leave it. Avg tried to bully us by saying May was it, but obviously after all the problems and posts they changed for a little while. Software companies assume "not as good as they want" performance when shipped knowingly keeping developers noses to the grindstone for the next "patch" subsequently the populace has become too forgiving. I guess some would be forgiving but not me. When the network is down because of a software "glitch" and the boss is screaming I don't want to tell him the system crashed because of software because he doesn't care.

anon : First of all everyone may have a different experience because you all have different computers, so I can only speak for mine, Its not always fair to blame AVG 8 for all your problems. I recently did a Clean Install of Xp Pro with Sp3 slipstreamed. I run a Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz 2gigs ram. My system runs 0-2 cpu usage,(Have about 31 processes running)The only thing I have running down by my clock is Commodo Firewall Pro 2.4) not even breathing hard, You want real slow downs try NORTON.

I too uninstalled AVG 8 went back to 7.5 but then I got the nag that support would end May 31, so I went back to 8. I have been running it for a while now with no issues.

To simplify things for people who do not like to tweak, why not just Disable Link Scanner within the program after install??? easy to do, then go into your browser...Firefox its an ad-on and disable AVG safe search. In IE go to manage ad-ons & disable it. I also disabled Auto anything. I did not install mine with email scanner , I do not use Outlook, why not let someone else handle all the problems like Gmail etc. You can also disable the tray Icon by going into Msconfig.

I too have tried other free solutions but I keep coming back to old reliable AVG, its been around long enough to be trust worthy. I did find some false positives when scanning but that was because I have Spybot S&D with immunization turned on. You have to stop & think for a minute, the reason it may take a bit longer on some machines is it now scans for a lot more problems than in 7.5.

The bottom line here is we should not be so quick to condemn AVG 8 they are providing an excellent FREE service,& its only the first version out of beta, give them a chance, Look how many program updates there were for previous versions of AVG. I run Windows Defender & Spybot S&D so I did not really what more spyware protection but I can live with it,as I do not have to pay for definition updates every year.

anon : There are many reasons why it is slow. #1 this program is bloated like other combo programs i.e. Norton. There is a slider bar and it is set in the middle. Plus there are so many other thngs to configure. They don't have "global" configurations. You can configure each little part even in the free version. That is good and bad. Bad for newbies because it makes everything worse by a long shot. This program needs big time work. I have been using it on workstations and servers and am very disappointed. There is no one size fits all check for everything. Is the person at work for 5 hours muddling around and does little work better than the person there for and hour that goes flat out and gets it done? Again spyware and virus scanning running together is not good. How could AVG have such a great product in ver. 7.5 and go to 8? If you look at the tools and advanced menu you can experiment with unchecking certain boxes. You have to be careful but for instance "Scan Potentially Unwanted Programs and Spyware Threats" is worthless as far as I am concerned. It adds massively to scan time with little payback. Also AVG 8 has many false positivse in active X controls from microsoft for example.

anon : Not a dumb question. The answer is yes and no. When you scan your P.C. the software just doesn't scan every file unless you tell it to do so. Virus software uses intelligence by the program and developer to scan the most effective way to find "known" viruses as identified by the program's database. By having the most updated virus database will take out many viruses in the "resident" portion of the program. It gets complicated on the software side but viruses are all about money and exploitation these days. We pay money to software companies to ensure that we are up to date with our virus definitions. Believe it or not no matter what program you pick and as long as you scan regularly and keep the Anti-virus program updated you are good to go. Its when you slack off that the problems occur. Also empty you Internet Explore cache and temp files regularly because that is where the general malware likes to reside.

anon : I am not sure what OS you have but Windows xp alone has far more than 70,000+ "object"' because that is what the program is scanning. Typically most people have more like 300,000+ objects. The P.C. I am on now has been scanning for 3.5 hours and probably has another 2 to go. I am letting the program run to the end to see exactly how long it takes. It is configured to run the fasteset speed it can. The P.C. is not very good, and I wouldn't mind more time just not like this. I am deciding whether to deploy the new AVG 8 for my business and so far a resounding NO is the answer. We have been very happy with AVG 7.5 for years. I put the new AVG in the classes with Norton and all the other far too agreesive dogs with nothing more than a name. Just like Vista a shiny dog that cannot walk without assistance! A person or user should be able to still use the P.C. during a scan. Maybe the performance is slower but again SOFTWARE is supposed to work with us for productivity. We are not supposed to alter our work for it. A big loss for AVG!

AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

anon : I'm sorry to say this but the older AVG was so much better. No it just makes it feel more like Vista. The interface is nice and polished, almost like the newer Spyware Blaster but the product is so damn slow now. I used to hate Avast but now even that is probably faster than the new AVG. I'm also not a big fan of the new Link Scanner they added, seemed to cause so many problems on my system, and that was on a clean and updated install mind you. Come on Grisoft, get your act together!
