I installed it on a couple of older PC's and one laptop on my network and do not see any significant hit on performance. Scanning probably takes a little longer but I do not set automatic scans; just did one after installation.
But here's the difference.
I did a "Custom Install" and unchecked all the boxes except the real-time scanner. No web checker, no email scanner, no surf-safe, etc.
None of those features make you any safer because the real-time scanner will flag anything on access. Don't install them and you should avoid associated problems.

I tried custom install and unfortunately the link scanner still installs, even tried Avg's post about not installing it. Apparently this cannot be done with the free version. Please tell me I am wrong! |

Please tell me I am wrong! According to the email I received from Grisoft a little over a month ago, you can't skip the linkscanner in the Pro version as well. "Note that AVG LinkScanner component is a core AVG component and can not be excluded from the installation" is exactly how it was worded. |

If you downloaded it to your desktop as you say... you will not see it at C:
Download it to the root of the C drive and FOLLOW instructions.
