Hopefully it's only once every couple years, or even less often!

I totally agree with you. If you don't have the support to back it then make the service free (example gmail: can someone give me a 800 # to call google if I am having trouble logging in to my account? Nope, because they don't provide free tech support for free customers). Also, I am completely against renting a dedicated server somewhere in the middle of someone's data center (there are a whole list of times when you should do this, but if you are running a hosting business then you shouldn't. Game server on the other hand is ok). If you don't have instant access to the servers, then its not worth it (I don't know his setup, but it looks like he has a server with gnax.net as that is who owns the IP address that is tied to his domain) because you simply can't provide the kind of support that is required for hosting.

I believe the best hosters (and service providers) are the ones who are willing to provide you their cell phone (or a direct number) in case you have a problem with something. You can yell at a person, you can't yell at a recording of "press 1 to do this".

I have actually ran into a hosting company that promised 100% uptime. That my friends is an outright lie. And don't even get me started with the "overselling" of webspace speech. If you can't provide that space to every customer, then don't provide it....

I would almost bet that WHP has something in their TOS that if you start to climb up to 1TB, that they have the "right" to kick you without any warning. The highest I will give out is 1GB (more if you ask for it...but that's only under certain circumstances).

Morale: If you see any sort of outrageous claims of a lot of webspace or bandwidth, its probably a scam or not that reliable of a service to begin with (unmetered/unlimited is a different story, but when you start seeing numbers in the TBs you are just making stuff up to attract customers). Yahoo, is probably the only company that can make that claim (and they do, I think its 10$/month for unlimited webspace and bandwidth...or something really dirt cheap like that).

kevin42 : So let me see if I got this right... 1.2TB of space, $4.95/month... but that's only if I prepay for 2 years. For a month to month, it's $16.95/month +plus+ a $15.95 setup fee.

And the AUP has this gem in there:

It is to be used for standard web practices and only standard web practices. [... ...] Un-Normal usage is anything that a shared server would not be able to provide.

(Distributing any form of software is apparently considered *not* a "standard web practice", so don't even think about that one... funny, I could have sworn that was one of the things the web revolutionized for all of us.. software distribution.. oh well, off to Kmart to pick up some more shareware discs I guess...)

"anything that a shared server would not be able to provide". I love that one, since there is absolutely no way for a client to know what a shared server could or could not handle, since it depends entirely on the size of the box, the number of clients, and who else is busy at the time... The only person who could conceivably know this is the hosting company, but lets be honest, if they were sticking to this rule, they'd never be offering 1.2TB and 12TB of bandwidth in the first place.... 12TB... giggle.. that's what, around 40mbps all month long? For $4.95.... uhhh huh.

I just find it laughable that anyone markets a service full-well knowing that not a *single* client is going to get anywhere near their "full usage" out of it, since the TOS/AUP is worded exactly to prevent it in any way shape or form.

Everyone likes to use the Cellphone analogy ("Well, if everyone tried to use it at once, it would *break*"), well, I have a whooping 400 minutes/month on my cell plan right now, and you know how many I used for August? ~370ish. I *almost* hit my limit. Please, let me know when any single client manages to get *anywhere* near their paid-for amounts with you, and I'll come over and bring all my sites with me, kay?

In the meantime, I'll stick with my $5.95/month much smaller limits (think in terms of "megabytes" and "gigs", not "gigs" and "terabytes" for starters), but I can actually use every single one of them and not risk fa;ling victim to some strange AUP wording and loosing everything.

There's overselling, and then there's just pulling numbers out of the sky and then using the AUP to hide when people try to actually use it.

Would either of those be a violation of TOS? If so, why have a TOS that prohibits the very things that would make your host desirable in the first place?

Simply put, our TOS doesn't allow backing up of your personal data. This restriction is put in place to allow proper use of the disk space. If you want to backup your personal files, I would suggest getting an external hard drive or a secondary drive for your desktop. Not only will you have more control over the data, but it will be alot faster for backing up. (If you are thinking that would cost too much, Frys Electronics has 1TB drives on sale all the time for $75. That's less than 1 year of hosting with WHP. Sure with WHP you get 1700GB of space, but if you truly have that much data that you want to 'backup' ... I would not suggest backing it up to the web over your cable connection. )

With regards to using your webspace for sharing legit files, instead of dealing with emailing them... this is perfectly acceptable on the WHP network.

And actually, you assume incorrectly. I don't share the same philosophy. In fact, I don't agree with overselling. CityWideHost prides itself on NOT overselling.

Unfortunately, overselling is everywhere. And we're all effected by it in one way or another. My internet connection, my cell phone, my sew pipes, the pool in my community, the highways... it's all oversold. :D

So do I avoid using my internet connection, talking on my cell phone, flushing the toilet, swimming in my pool, or driving on the highways - because they might be overused or crowded when I need them? I think not. I pay for all these things, and they are available IF and when I need them. I would say the same is true of my upstream bandwidth provider, or in this case - the hosting company. IF you need more bandwidth or more diskspace than you're currently using or is available, I'm sure the hosting company would have the resources to provide more. Bandwidth and storage is relatively cheap these days. With the cost of fuel, power and the power to keep AC on is what's expensive. Oh and rent as well, depending on where you're located.
