| what service do I REALLY have?
Hi, I have had Comcast for the last 4 years with a dual-tuner DVR. I have never signed up for HD channels, however, I do get them. I understand from a neighbor that if you have the dual dvr, then it comes with HD access.
Anyway, this weekend, I picked up a second HD dvr (I thought they all were HD, as stated above, but the clerk at Comcast told me there is a difference). I hooked it up to my HD Samsung LCD tv. Now I get even more channels but have not signed up for HD service. When I call Comcast and ask what my services are, it says nothing about HD. I'm afraid to tell them I get the channels! Also, when I search for HD channels on the menu, it only shows me a few, but when I scan through the chanels, I get a lot more! (at least they SAY they are HD and they look like they are).
Last but not least, I rarely use On Demand, but decided to scan thru the listings because, you know, new tv and all. I see a new item on the menu (Premium channels) and i can actually watch a lot of it (HBO, Cinemax(?), Starz). So, of course, I call Comcast again and ask what services do I have. No premium channels.
Anyone have a clue what's going on? I'm TOTALLY confused! |

| Well, that answer has two parts:
1. On the older box (HD panasonic tv) I have been receiving HD channels for a while, even though I never changed my service. Sorry I don't really watch a lot of different channels, but for sure I have been watching HGTV in hi-def for at least 2 or 3 months, also ESPN and the Comcast sports rendering for the DC area (not sure what it is, but it shows Wizards games, and after game highlights and talk stuff). There are others, but I can't recall what they are. Since I never really scanned up and down the channels on the older DVR, there may be more that I don't know about. I'm going to check this evening when I get home.
2. On the new box that I just picked up, I called in to Comcast to have the box provisioned, and those extra channels are what I ended up with. Could they have made an error in provisioning? Or does the fact that I have HGTV in hi-def mean I had HD channels all along?
Does anyone know if you have to actually have HD service to get HD channels? |

| If you are able to watch HBO and other premium service on demand moviews without subbing to those services, then it certailny looks like some sort of error was made by Comcast somwehere. As far as HD goes, some areas are different in what tiers certain HD channels are in. |

| reply to luvhh You should be able to get the HD broadcast channels, as they are usually unencrypted. You may also get HD versions of any channels that are part of your regular subscription.
The HD DVR includes HD service, which is why it is more expensive (typically $13.99 now). In some areas, there is an SD-only DVR available, which is a bit cheaper per month. |

And some customers who get a new digital box start getting billed for PPV events they never ordered - because it was from the previous customer. |
