FIOS to all by 2014?!

A buddy that I race online with works for VZ FIOS and I told him I wish I had it. He told me that ALL VZ customers would receive FIOS by 2014. I'm not sure if that is every single VZ household or just the parts of the states that they can get it in. I take it that it would be every VZ customer within their teritories b/c he said "Everyone will have it by 2014".

Wrong.....Not everyone will have FiOS. It's just unrealistic that VZ will put fiber in every rural area. Rural areas will still depend on copper and wireless for voice and data.

Economically it just doesn't make sense. VZ will blanket roughly 80% of there current customer base by then with fiber. The remaining 20% will be screwed.

Yes, that is what I was thinking. It couldn't be every single household.. If its close to 80% then I should be looking forward to it by then. Where I am is really not considered as a rural area, but it is just outside of the Charleston City limits. We will see once they are ready to roll it out where they will go with it.

no way, by 2014 i bet ALL verizon costumers will easily have fiber (or rather access to fiber). In 2014 technology is going to be way more advanced and fiber will be a hell of a lot cheaper and more affordable. I doubt that FiOS wouldn't reach every household by 2014 at all. I am not saying everyone will have it im just saying they could have access to it.

You seriously believe that Verizon is going to invest money by deploying fiber to poor urban areas or other "unprofitable" locations?

That is just what they did where I used to live - the town was very upscale for the most part (mostly $1M+ homes), yet the end of town that was "urban" was wired up and live first. Last time I drove through, they actually had quite a few takers too, judging by the number of drops going from pole to home.

I believe the comment was made recently concerning the New York City franchise being 100% built out by 2014, not all of Verizon's territories.

How do you define " access " I mean I could order and OC3 or OC12 tomorrow for a hefty price....
So I guess you could say I have access.

Its not about the technology. We all the know the technology will get better but keep in mind it still cost money to run all this fiber. Your talking alot of man hours installing it. Thi is where the true cost is and always will be.

There are many, many rural areas that will never see fiber in the next 20 years. Those areas will be served by either WiMax, LTE or some other technolgy that is developed in the future.

well thats the thing, fiber by 2014 is going to be so cheap for them to lay down that they have no reason not to invest their money in the poorer areas. If its affordable enough ppl are going to pay for the service and Verizon is going to make a profit.

No fiber for NYC. Sorry.....

Verizon FIOS will never make it to my area, not even by 2014 in all likelyhood. I have honest doubts.

Verizon is just one company of many. Whatever the incumbent cableco Time Warner has will be far superior infrastructure for some time to come. In fact, Time Warner did node work to the node before the one where my node was split from just the other day. Im not sure what work was done and if my own node was affected since my service never went down during this time. Verizon has not even laid a single fiber optics line here as its all copper POTS infrastructure still.

I find the 2014 date overly optimistic and I don't hold up hopes for FIOS by this date.

there's all kinds of predictions for 2014, the Aztecs say the world end then, so does Nostradamus, now Verizon will have fiber to all by then, my prediction is we will wise up by then, give up oil and nuclear power use only solar cells and wind power , and only electric cars will be made that get 300 miles to a recharge.

good luck waiting and DON'T drink the coolade

Well, it does save them on long-term maintenance.

Of course, there's more than one way to get Fios to all Verizon customers. For example, they could just sell off the customers they don't want to hook up. Then they wouldn't be Verizon customers, and wouldn't count against the total. (I note for the record that they're actually doing this, too.)

So, in other words, it's no promise that any given (current) customer will ever get Fios, just a statement that it's Verizon's intent to move their landlines (the ones they keep) to Fios, only. I think this was already known, BTW.

Will homeless shelters in NYC get access to FIOS?

My friend worked in the financial sector and lost his job and became homeless so now hes looking for homeless shelters to live in.

Would be nice if Verizon would give out free FIOS to homeless shelters so that there could be computers inside to help the homeless get back on their feet.

They did the exact same thing in the neighborhood I live in. The older parts of town were wired first, because their lines were on above ground poles. Even though the nicer parts have much bigger houses ($1M - $2M+), it's much cheaper to string up lines on poles that to go digging up everyone's front yards.

First the City has to get the franchise agreement in place and finish the existing areas. Then maybe they will get to the rest of it.

It has also been the case here, above ground will get worked on first, as it is fastest and easiest. In fact, someone I saw this morning said she noticed that the ground was being dug up in parts of Washington Twp, NJ, but part of that area already has service. My guess is, it was the above ground portions closest to the CO.
