anon : I don't think its the router that's causing your massive latency... I think the people whom you are sharing the service with are putting a strain on the connection (P2P, or something bandwidth intensive). Try running a few speed tests when you seem to be experiencing latency, and see if your up/down throughput is reduced. If any of them are doing a high volume of data transfer, it can easily send your latency though the roof, and getting low speed test results during that should point it out.

If the lights on the router are constantly flashing like crazy, it's likely you have a lot of activity that may affecting your latency.

"This network upgrade allows us to offer faster speeds at greater distances, enabling customers to accomplish more in less time through a dedicated Internet connection at a great value."
scots : Oh...yeah...I posted in that topic. I can see Charlotte getting a speed bump way before Raleigh does. I'd be willing to bet some cash that AT&T will deploy U-verse in Charlotte before Raleigh (or any other area they serve in NC), and it's my understanding that Windstream offers ADSL2+ in parts of Charlotte or in the Charlotte area at speeds of 12/786. This is most likely why Charlotte will get a speed bump from TWC soon.

Until AT&T deploys U-verse in Raleigh and/or Verizon deploys FIOS in Durham there's absolutely no reason for TWC to do a speed bump in Raleigh. I've seen absolutely no indication that either one is coming to the Raleigh/Durham area any time soon. AT&T had a big hoopla press event almost a year ago in Raleigh about U-verse coming to NC (no specific areas mentioned), and they said there would be another press release at the end of 2007 with more info and possible dates. That second press release still hasn't happened.

TWC speed bumps are done by franchise, and Raleigh and Charlotte are two different TWC franchises (even though they're in the same state). TWC has three franchises in NC. Charlotte, Triad, and Eastern NC. They recently merged the Raleigh/Durham franchise with the Eastern NC franchise. The only way I'd see Raleigh getting a speed bump from TWC before U-verse or FIOS comes around is if there's some little podunk town that's part of the Eastern NC franchise which has Windstream as the local telco, and Windstream adds ADSL2+ there.
