|  Dedicated IP vs Dynamic IP
Need a DSL Tech or DSL Extreme users to help me to decide between using a dedicated IP over a dynamic IP. Building and constructing a W3C compliant web site and looking for a (SEO) or Search Engine Optimized Friendly internet provider that will help with (SEO) ranking. I am currently using a dynamic IP. I understand Internet providers can host or share upwards to 9,000 different domains on one IP. I would like to know by asking a DSL Extreme Tech If you can share that many domains on a dynamic IP? Thanks for the response in advance. |

| I maybe wrong here or totally off track missing the question but. If you wanna do domain pointing to an IP it should be with a Static IP, even though DSLX's DHCP IP don't change that often, you will still wanna set the domains TTL to a relatively low time in case of change. As far as how many Domains can point to a single IP, that would not be a limitation of the IP itself, only who ever is doing your pointing and with some many places geared for virtual domain hosting, I doubt that's a problem.
But you may wanna wait for an official response to be sure.

It's pretty easy to host domains on dynamic IPs these days with dynamic IP locators. It's not something I'd do for anything mission critical, though.
Unless something has changed, DSLExtreme does not prohibit servers on dynamic connections. But like any good ISP, there is a clause regarding network disruptions:

Interference with or disruption of other network users, network services or network equipment is prohibited. A customer may not, through action or inaction, allow others to use their network for illegal or inappropriate actions. A customer may not permit their network, through action or inaction, to be configured in such a way that gives a third party the capability to use their network in an illegal or inappropriate manner.
So, whatever you're doing, it's important that your service not generate a disruptive amount of traffic!
The number of domains hosted is a function of the web server, not a function of the connection. As far as the ISP is concerned, it's all just inbound traffic on port 80. It is then the web server's responsibility to look at the headers to determine which domain was requested, and serve the appropriate pages. So as long as the traffic generated by these sites is not disruptive, there's no real limit to the number of domains you can host.

Thank you everyone for responding to this post message. I just finish speaking with a DSL Extreme tech and he pretty much answered my specific question(s)I was asking. I have a better understanding on why you would want to use a static over a dynamic. I did not include on the post that that the web site that is being under construction will be used for a small business and will eventually be accepting credit cards and using e- shopping carts. | I have a feeling from both your posts (and even from the first one) you were talking about DSLExtreme web-hosting (not as an ISP). If you were running the server yourself (and DSL Extreme on an ISP) then whether multiple sites are on the same IP or not would have to do with your server setup and whether it used virtual hosts or not (Since DSL Extreme never shares IPs on the ISP end). Definitely couldn't comment on their hosting but I would assume they are shared IPs unless you pay an extra fee for a unique IP address (atleast that is how it is with the company I work for and 99% of all other shared hosts I know of).

Excuse my ignorance I am not well versed on "virtual hosts". Can you tell me what you mean by ("Since DSL Extreme never shares IPs on the ISP end).? I did talk to a DSL Extreme Tech and I mentioned that, "I understand a Dynamic IP can be shared by an unlimited number of different domains on one IP, and if I shared an IP with an unseemly website owner who is trying to beat the system I run the risk of having the entire IP banned instantly losing search credibility". Which he did not deny and in turn responded and suggested that by turning off port 25 my hosting company can administer opting for a Static IP on my DSL Extreme account and if I was banned I can check a web site www.mxtoolbox.com to find out. Since we do not have a
a web site up yet and did not pursue the question any further. I left it at that. My immediate questions were answered and was satisfied with the response. |
