| Backup arrow when reading "new posts" in a thread.
When I click on the -> arrow for new posts in followed topics I often encounter replies to earlier messages which I have forgotten and which are not quoted.
To review earlier messages, I go to the top of the previous page or the top of the current page. It would be a lot smoother if I could just scroll back to recent previous messages, either by topic or by thread. A backup arrow going to the previous message, located at the top of the page view would do the job nicely.
Perhaps there is already such a thread navigation feature, but I'm not aware of it. -- If America has an official philosophy, it surely includes the belief in individualism, competition, private property, democracy, freedom, and a deep faith in education. | When you use the blue arrow, the first message begins with "reply to someuser" If you click on that, it takes you to the message to which this is a reply.
Personally, I like the way the blue arrow is currently implemented, and don't see the need for a backup arrow. Clicking on the "reply to" link is usually enough, and I can still go back to the start of the thread if I need a more thorough review.

| Thanks for the tip.
I mistakenly assumed that clicking on the "reply to some-user" took you to the profile for "some-user" because that's how user profiles are linked elsewhere such as in the "last" column in the forum view.
I think the purpose of the link in "reply to some-user" might be made clearer with the addition of a back arrow symbol right next to it. What would you think of that? -- If America has an official philosophy, it surely includes the belief in individualism, competition, private property, democracy, freedom, and a deep faith in education. | reply to jmorlan said by jmorlan :When I click on the -> arrow for new posts in followed topics I often encounter replies to earlier messages which I have forgotten and which are not quoted. It's a variant of the general problem of not getting taken to a post IN CONTEXT.
Widgets that remember the last post read and take you to that point in the thread should take you there EXACTLY the same way that you would have navigated there yourself (i.e. by choosing the same page that you were on and scrolling to the first unread post, with all of the page number widgets functioning).
Displaying only the first unread post and its followups, without any context or navigation ability, isn't helpful at all.
This also applies to the "Your Post Has A Reply" IM that you get - if you click on the "Reply" link, what is displayed is not in context, so I wind up clicking the thread start and immediately going to the last page manually - that gets me there IN CONTEXT.
It's a design feature so I doubt it would be easy to change. |
