Modem + router Setup issues: xbox Live and MIRC

Okay, so when I first got Teksavvy, I was told to set up my internet as such:

1) Connect phone line to modem
2) connect modem port to WAN port of router
3) setup router with my teksavvy login
4) ?
5) profit.

So, I've had it like this for a while, and never really paid much attention to the intermittent disconnects on MIRC, but after reading some threads, and going to the teksavvy support page, I've noticed a new setup configuration with both 'bridged mode' and 'routed mode' for the modem.

Here are my problems:

1) My internet runs fine, I download fast, and all that stuff, but that's not the issue.

2) If I'm using IRC, and I'm idling for x amount of minutes, I get disconnected ("Software in the host machine caused disconnect") -- I never got this when I was on bell.

3) Xbox live: I thought this might have been the throttling, but it's not -- my NAT shows as open, which is the best you can get for xbox live, but, when my 360 logs in, I can be online for about 10 minutes or less, then live disconnects me. I have a suspicion that this is my setup.

This is my home network:

MODEM > 4-port wireless D-Link Router > PC (wired), 360 (wired), PS3 (wired), 2x Laptops (wireless), Wii (wireless)

Currently, my router logs into the PPoE connection, whereas the new setup guides on the teksavvy site does not show that configuration anymore,

question is: Should I do the set up in bridged mode, or routed mode? What's the advantages of either? I don't want to have to log in or 'connect' every time I want to use the internet, and there's no definition of what each mode means.

Help!

Re: Modem + router Setup issues: xbox Live and MIRC

Well, for the Mirc issue, I get kicked with some frequency during the throttle period, never got kicked before the throttling started, and still don't get kicked when the throttle is off. So that may be part of the issue.

I know that "they" say the throttle "does not affect irc", but I have enough experience with the throttle now to know it is affecting my irc connection.

Cheers!
