No good ideas. Unfortunately, neither you nor Road Runner have any standing to ask a company to correct a problem when you aren't a customer. If ATT wants to tolerate poor latency, that is their choice.

What does an end to end ping look like?

(Traceroute is not the best choice to diagnose network congestion, it should always be used in association with end to end ping testing)

You're right K Patterson, ATT will not take any of my calls, or emails. They asked me to have blizzard contact them directly and open a ticket. But this has been going on for 2 weeks already, and its driving me nuts.

Darkside, blizzard wont run a reverse tracert to my location, all they keep telling me is to contact my ISP. They repeat this over and over again.

Try sending a tracert to ATT about it. Looks like thats your only choice I hate to say.

I'm not a Roadrunner user, I am a Verizon DSL user, but if you guys would like for e-mail trace routes to AT&T, I can give you guys my trace route. I am seeing the same lagging problem when trace routing to that server on AT&T's network on the same hop as well. I do game myself on Blizzard's servers every now and again and have noticed some lagging lately. Just in case if you guys want them.

Unlike you, I don't see the latency spike until well into the AT&T Worldnet Services (ATTW) transit network:
Southern California does not, normally, show very high latency from the S.F. Bay Area:

What World of Warcraft realm is this?
Is there a thread at »forums.worldofwarcraft.com/board···10&sid=1

I'm certain other players are experiencing this. There is strength in numbers you know.

Here's my trace route on my DSL.

After hop 20, everything else times out. Hope this helps.

the realm is boulderfist. I've also tried playing on a closer server in boston, and once i hit the first hop on any ATT network, my latency jumps from 10-20ms to 150+ during primetime.

att was sent a bunch of tracerts, and they still stick to having blizzard contacting them. Blizzard is saying its my ISP and i should have them forward it to ATT.

dunno anymore.

For Reference as well, here's what I'm getting on Frontier DSL as well, a connection almost 3 miles away from my house (which has the Verizon connection I ran a traceroute on before to the same location).

Again, it's nearly the same spot as my Verizon connection, nd AT&T hop, as Frontier and Verizon appear to be possibly taking the same routes, while Frontier is taking a path through a different router. If the first router itself is fine, but the next hop after the AT&T router is where the lag starts, it's got to be a router that's under load. So yes, AT&T problem. Here's more to add if you'd like it.

Actually, those 100 ms times are not too bad. What is happening is that the route back to you is via California, starting with the first ATT router with high ping times. If that were not the case, you would see a progressive increase in the latency as you went from NY to Washingto to Dallas, etc. The minimum possible latency for that path is around 50 ms.

The final router, mdf001c7613r0003-gig-10-1.lax1.attens.net [12.129.193.242], is not an ATT router. It belongs to the gaming company or their ISP. It is assigned an ATT IP because it has to be on the same subnet as the outgoing port of the preceeding router. The big jump in latency there suggest that ATT's customer has not purchased adequate bandwidth.

thanks for the info KP. Im emailing back and fourth with their tech department. They're telling me like usual, my ISP needs to be contacted because its a peering issue with them and Level3, and level3 than has to contact ATT. They're taking zero responsibilty in this.

I've contacted ATT, Level3 and RR. All 3 tell me 3 different things, and im just at a lost now =/

thanks again KP!
