Re: I hope they're working on something big..

Trust me the cablevision guys who work behind the scenes know there is a problem. HEre at the library when we got boost we had speed problems (libraries get better support then home or businesses) and they worked on the problem for two days.

One of the cablevision supervisiors who came to fix the problem told me that so many people are signing up for boost that the network cant handle it.

That starting in the babylon area they are splitting nodes to help compensate.

They eventually got our speed problems with boost fixed so i say keep hounding tech support and ask for a higher level of support.

That gives me a little bit of a re-assurance, but to say I'm not fed up with this would be a lie. Anyone would be, but again, I do not expect a fix in a day. Also, another thing which reassures me a bit is user JohnDrenZ See Profile was experiencing downstream problems. A few days ago, his setup was repaired and according to John, his speeds are holding.

One way to redress the long amount of time is to issue some [promised] credit, and wait it out. I also mentioned that I tend to be a bleeding edge person when it comes to technology, and it would really bum me out if CVC was to roll out new DOCSIS 3 tiers in a year with me stuck at 12-16mbit at best...

Ironic, the supervisor who came said that at most there are a handful of BOOST users on my node, and completely ruled out congestion when seeing that my speeds were bad all the time.

The BOOST techies with him agreed.. I suspect it's a faulty something, somewhere... Nothing more than that. Eventually they'll find it.

So, here's to hope.
Regards,
Dave

Streetspirit are you getting boost upload speeds or are they both in the regular package speeds?

Something at cablevisions end was only giving us regular speeds (was a network wide problem or something like that they had to do some major hunting to find it).

Yes, probably a $25 part that they would gladly replace if they knew where it was...

Tom, uploads are ~4.5-5mbps, well in the Boost range. If 60-70% of my traffic wasn't upstream, I would've went to standard OOL a long time ago.

Only downstream is affected. I have a good 4-6 months of continuous tests in the morning hours in the private forum. Cablevision's own GUI speed test shows 12-16mbps downstream. FTP downloads never exceed ~1.6MB/s since December 2007. Well except for a few hours on February 1st when the speeds rose to 29mbps for a few hours then promptly fell back down.

About a month ago, Cablevision has called in the Big Boys. It felt like I was playing host to an Engineers convention. I had the local plant supervisor, two Boost business techs and a rep from RFDN (backbone) testing here about a month back for almost an entire day. They used their own laptop and modem, and even ran a fresh drop all the way down 15 flights of stairs to the media converter on the street to see if it's an inside-building wiring problem.

I'd really like to get this corrected as of course with DOCSIS 3 coming, being stuck at 16mbps downstream would TOTALLY suck.

The supervisor mentioned that there are only 3 or 4 other BOOST users on my node/media converter. This "feels" like some network element is bad. It isn't congestion.

Dave

Wouldnt 3 users running boost all out plus some 15/2 users running stuff all out screw up your node?

Perhaps, but honestly, I don't think that is the case here.

Besides, those users would have to be running without a break for the past six months, without sleep, computer crashes, and power outages (to which this building is prone due to antiquated interior AC wiring) - I use a commercial UPS. As the node is on the street, I don't loose cable, and have been using a UPS for years...

Let's not forget that I stopped seeing >16mbps around six months ago, consistently, backed up by many posted speed tests.

Also, the last thing that happened was I had the area Supervisor here, two boost techs and a guy from RFDN at the same time for a good several hours. I seriously doubt Cablevision would go to that expense unless the local Supervisor felt the problem was "undiagnosed". If it's a congestion problem, there would be no reason for them to spend hours running a drop up 15 flights of stairs to rule out in building wiring...

They said that the BOOST channels my modem was being assigned are hardly used, and the customers are definitely residential in this area. Heck, I recently found out that the Verizon CO local to my condo has had Verizon FIOS wiring before the others which are now live, but due to the fact that it's in a not-so-profitable area (residential, lower-middle class), we'll probably see FIOS years after people 4 blocks away do.

Anyway.. You might be right, I can't say I'm a cable engineer in any capacity.

Regards,
Dave

I am almost in the same boat as you but Fios is still not available to order in my apartment and I cannot get them to wire it even though it is 4 apartments no matter who I call and I am friends with the landlord and have permission to do anything I want and still a no go.

The only reason I do have Fios internet is because the house next to my building can get Fios and my landlord owns it and my friend lives there so I asked to install Fios there and got the ok so I ran a 160 foot cat 5 cable there and got internet only so I got lucky that I was able to get that and I couldn't be happier with the SUPER CONSISTENT speeds I get now.

I hope you get something soon Dave because I have been there and it sucks !!!! Good luck

Seriously

So Verizon gave you the OK to steal service?

Its not stealing I am paying for it but have it installed at my friends house and only I am using it. If they had it installed here I would get it but they won't do it yet so that was my only option.
