4 edits | ZyXel G2000+ performance issues
For some reason my ZyXel G2000+ has performance issues when connecting to my ISP service.
The test configuration is as follows:
XP home current patch single PC attached VIA wired connection, XP firewall enabled
G2000+ V1 current firmware, RADIUS/WPA enabled, 32 character WPA key, RADIUS users disabled, no clients connected, default NAT and WAN config (DHCP client)
Motorola SB4200 to TW Roadrunner 7Mbps up/500Kbps down connection
When I speed test to »www.speedtest.insight.rr.com/ with the PC connecting directly to the modem (ZyXel bypassed, not connected) I get consistent 6.8 Mps down, 499 Kbps up.
When I connect the PC to the Zyxel and the ZyXel to the modem, the speed drops to consistently under 3Mbps down, 495 Kbps up.
When I substitute my hoary old Netgear FVS318 for the ZyXel, speeds go to about 6.3 Mbps down, 499Kbpos up.
I'd expect some drop with a router/firewall between the PC and modem, but the G2000+ really slows down the connection.
I tried various MTU settings and tweaks on the PC using this program (1500 seems to be OK with the Netgear and the barefoot PC connection) but it didn't help.
Any ideas where to start on this? The only hint I get is that packet queueing is occurring when I run the test with the ZyXel and none when I connect with the PC or PC behind the Netgear. -- Mayors of New York come from nowhere and go nowhere. Wallace Sayre (apparently, so do governors... ) |

| Thanks for the tip!
I can't find any way to access the duplex settings on the G2000+ - I tried the GUI and telnet interface. There doesn't seem to be any CLI either.
The modem is similarly set up, RR owns it - maybe I can call them and see if they can provide me with their settings.

| reply to EGeezer On a ZyWALL the commands are these.

| I'll contact the RR office to see if I can get the latest - I got the 4400 after receiving three bad 5500s in a row. Two died after a few hours and the third was DOA, so they gave me a 4400.
In the meantime is there a way to access the TCP settings in the G2000+ V1? I tried telnetting in as well as using the web interface, but no options for ethernet settings or MTU. Both interfaces are menu-driven and I could find no option to go to command line entry. -- Mayors of New York come from nowhere and go nowhere. Wallace Sayre (apparently, so do governors... ) |

| Via telnet go to menu 24 then menu option 8, then you get the cli mode and can type the commands.
But do you know what speed and duplex your modem is running? If so you can try to get the G2000 match that at first.

1 edit | Thanks for the CLI tip - I musta been asleep at the wheel to miss it.
I have since done additional testing. The slowdown seems to occur on any PC that uses a Linksys LNE100TX wired ethernet NIC. When I use my laptop on the wireless and wired side of the router, speeds are normal. That leads me to believe that it's a compatibility or parameter matching issue between the Linksys NIC and the G2000+'s LAN enet port.
The Linksys NIC has no configuration settings except 10/100 and half/full duplex. I've tried all combinations (10 HDx and FDx, 100 HDx and FDx) without success, so it appears changing the MTU is the best hope right now.
I'm now hunting for a CLI reference for the G2000+ so I can tweak the LAN side enet port's MTU settings. Don't want to blindly guess and make my G2000 a paperweight!
As always, the folks here are most helpful. I will still see if I can get RR to trade me an upgraded modem though.
EDIT - anyone have a link to the CLI reference for the G2000+ ? I can't find one on the ZyXel site. the ZYWALLs have different commands.

| Based on your suggestion, just looked in my ZyXel G2000+ firmware downloads and there it is, the CLI summary in the G-2000 Plus_3.60(HU4) zip file ( filename 360HU4CO.RTF )
There's also a ZYNOS FAQ.HTM in the G-2000 Plus_sn_360.ZIP support notes ZIP file that looks like it can help to educate me.
Now it's time for me to read up (and back up the config!).
Thanks for the help and sorry for the dumb questions, my own researching method has not been very good at finding stuff. -- Mayors of New York come from nowhere and go nowhere. Wallace Sayre (apparently, so do governors... ) |
