[DW7000] HughesNet forgot to FAP me!

Hi All,

I don't recall this ever happening before, but it seems that HughesNet forgot to FAP me. I was YouTubing last night and went over. I've been well over for about 16 hours now.

I wonder what's up...

Reg

P.S. FYI, here are my numbers from their FAP page for today:

Probably had to do with loss of email function. The "tech" was busy trying to dodge the bullets, arrows, and other projectiles being sent it's way.

Well, it's happening again now. I'm at about 500 MB during the past 24 hours, but no FAP. Is it really measuring over a 16-hour period instead of 24?

If so, then I calculate that in a month's time I can download about 13 GB during the "FAPpable" hours and another 40 GB during the FAP-free hours each day, assuming full usage and perfect timing.

I must say that the three FAP-free hours each day make HughesNet MUCH more manageable than it was in the past.

FAP is why I am switching to Wild Blue after 6 years with Directway/Hughes. I have three times had problems with the new HN9000 Spaceway service that has crippled throughput for days and even weeks at a time. The last two times the problem was escalated to Tier 4 (which is like the 7th level of Dante's hell - or limbo land). When this happens the diagnostics and troubleshooting puts my system into FAP status.

I was on hold last night trying to get through to tech support for 45 minutes, got to talk to someone for 2 minutes, was put on hold for 15 minutes, then the call was disconnected so I redialed Hughes and was on hold for over an hour. Any Spaceway HN9000 customers have to go through the full diagnostics script with level 1 support before they transfer you to advance support. Although the Spaceway program went from beta to production months ago, the level 1 people still have no information much less training on the new modem and troubleshooting.

No company that had any concern for its customers would provide such poor technical support. But when Hughesnet's subscribers have to make a large capital purchase of equipment and sign up for a 18-24 month plan, the management of Hughesnet obviously feels that they have you by the short hairs and you have no choice but to accept whatever service levels they decide to provide or whatever "fair access policy" they set to force subscribers to a still more costly service plan.

I know I have a system problem when I cannot ping hughesnet.com or amazon.com without losing 3 out of every 4 packets. This naturally kills performance and makes redirects fail for downloading files or for sending email with attachments.

I suspect all the system retrys at sending failed packets may also result in the FAP counter software erroneously thinking that because 100 packets are sent and resent 4 times that 400 packets are received and add to the FAP count even though my PC is actually getting only 100 packets. The problems are two-fold. Poor performance as Hughes works out the bugs with new hardware, a new satellite, and a new NOC in Nevada where all the HN9000 traffic is routed, and crude FAP tracking code (though no surprise this works to the benefit of Hughesnet.

Considering that Hughes on their basic plan has a maximum download of 200MB in any 24 hour period with their so called Fair Access Policy (marketing ploy) and Wild Blue has a base level FAP or 7500MB per 30 day period which averages to 250MB per day and one sees and incredible difference between Hughes and Wild Blue.

One to two times per month I need to download a large file that would immediately push me over the Hughes FAP unless I do it between 3-6 a.m. EST - which is not really the service I should get for the very high cost of Hughesnet. With Wild Blue it will be impossible for me to exceed the FAP and be shut down for an entire day - which also shuts down my business.

I am presently resorting to driving to a local Starbuck's and using their WiFi access to download the files I need for my computers until I can get the Wild Blue system installed. And normal Web surfing is no faster with Hughesnet than using 56K dial-up and often slower, so the only benefit to me is downloading large files quickly. With the onerous download policy of Hughes, this is no longer a real benefit and their is no reason to remain with Hughes for Internet access.

Anyone thinking of signing up for Hughesnet or extending their plan to get the HN9000 Spaceway "service" should take a look at Wild Blue or any other ISP option regardless of the initial cost. With Hughesnet one pays in time, lost productivity, dollars, and endless aggravation. The only companies in the same league with Hughesnet in terms of their rapacious conduct that I can think of are Microsoft (from day one) and AT&T before the breakup.
