| Considering EVDO - a few questions
I would appreciate anyone pointing me towards sources of info already here (faq?) or providing their personal insight about Verizon EVDO.
I'm particularly interested in the following:
- which modem is best? (of the ones Verizon offers). I see on their web page about four different models of different prices. The one that comes free is the UM-150. Any advantages in spending more?
- With a digital signal, if you're near the edge of zone of coverage, does the performance drop? I'm pretty well inside the coverage zone, but there's an area a mile or so away that is out.
- Any other concerns? Is it hard to hook in a wireless router for other users in your household?
Thanks
Edit: picked up the UM-150 and so far, so good! 650-750 kb downloads at 7:35PM, just tested Hughesnet and it came in at 145 kb, about typical for them these days.
Guess I'll be canceling Hughesnet. |

| You won't find the FAQ here as you did in satellite forum. I have been using the usb720 since last August, and love it! I bought and installed a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router about a month ago......extremly easy to set up.You'll find info about routers, antennas, and amplifiers here: »3gstore.com/index.php?main_page=···cPath=35
Don't forget to install DRTCP and set your receive window.

| Sorry, Larry, what is DRTCP and receive window? Do you have a link? I'm guessing this has to do with setting parameters within the OS of the computuer being used?
Never mind - found it on site search.
Thanks! |

| Sorry, I assumed that since you had been on satellite that you were familier with DRTCP.
Go to this thread and scroll down to the 8th post:
»[General] The 5 GB Limit
Follow instructions from there. It should help your speed.

| WINDOWS VISTA USERS: Vista TCP tuning (tweaking) is NOT advisable. The Vista TCP stack does a reasonable job of tuning the receive window dynamically, there are no known registry tweaks that would optimize Vista better than its default configuration. -- Earthlink Dial-Up with Verizon USB720 wireless, DRTCP, WinXP Pro, Dell 1.7 gb, 512 mb rdram. Remote from home in Reston, VA, getting some pretty incredible speeds up here!
Maybe I should move?
Not. Enjoy the sticks too much, but, a little tweaking and and antenna/amp maybe. |
