| q6600 overclocking questions
My new q6600 processor and motherboard (GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L Rev 2.0) arrived today. I'm going to be putting it together tomorrow but have a quick question. I'm currently running with 2 gigs of Crucial Ballistix DDR 2 667MHz ram. Is the ram going to hold me down in any respects to a basic overclock? I'm not looking to get to 3.0GHz+ or anything although I would like to bump it up to 2.66 or 2.8 if possible but was unsure if the speed of my ram will limit me in any way. I'd rather not have to buy new ram but I could if need be.

| i've heard good things about that ram, but never tried it myself.
i'd say go for the 3.0 though. it was the easiest speed for me and most stable. 333 X 9 and i set my memory divider to run it at advertised speed.
i went with an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro HSF to keep everything cool. cost like $32 at newegg and was the easiest damn HSF i ever installed. |

1. There is no such thing as a "basic overclock".
2. What ScOtt said.
3. Better advice could be formulated if you could give a direct link to your memory, like where you bought it.

even if they are the newer single sided modules you shouldnt have a problem hitting 800 with them.i wouldnt worry about them holding your oc back. |

Jord you could still overclock the processor even if the memory is holding you back. Run 9x 333 and leave the memory multiplier at 2.0 this would give you a 3.0 overclock and leave your memory running at 667. |

I bought it directly from crucial (except I bought 2 seperate 1 gig kits at different times) and have 2 gig of it running in dual channel mode. Thanks for the advice so far. It's up and running now and I'm watching the temps. They seem to be holding steady at around 30 degrees celsius so far with the stock speeds.

As maxfly  , has said you don't need to run your memory at a different multiplier. Any decent DDR2 667 ram will run at 800 speed and with the 9 CPU multiplier of the Q6600 that is all you need to get up to 3600MHZ if not limited to CPU cooling. |
