Slow emails

For many months now I have been experiencing a large delay in email recieving with mountaincable. Signing up to forums and websites that require email activation take hours to come in. E-mailing myself takes hours as well, its not just because of slow websites on sending out mail.

Anyone else have this issue? Or is it just me?

I don't use my mountain cable address so I don't know, that being said, I'd encourage you to check both webmail and your mail client to ensure the issue is not your PC/AV/Mail Client.

Nah, that's not whats causing it. I e-mailed mountaincable about it and this was their reply:

"The only change that may affect what you are experiencing is called "Greylisting". This is where the first initial email sent from outside our network is rejected to the original sender saying "Please Try Later". If the sending mail server is configured correctly, the first retry will happen in approximately 3-5 minutes and the message should go through. If however, the first retry is configured within 2 minutes, or at a later time (such as 30 minutes) then the message will eventually get permanently rejected to the user.

This is what we have done to attempt to reduce the amount of Spam that comes into our network, as most spammers will only send email once, and not even bother with a first or second retry attempt."

I can't say I like this method that they use, all too often emails that I do require from forums or sign-ups the activation email never comes in. I've decided to completely stop using mountaincable email service for the time being, I'm not missing out on closed betas because they think everything is spam.

Hmm.. can't say i've noticed any delays. I get emails from a number of people daily, although none of them are forum activations, i usually use another email from hotmail or gmail for those, let them get the spam rather than my personal accounts.

Are you sure emails to yourself take a long time as well? I just sent myself an email from my account and i received it in about 5 seconds. I also tried from my hotmail account to my mtncbl email and it was also fast, about 12seconds.

Guess it really does depend on email server configuration.
