Re: hell on dial up users

said by tim_k:

I'm still not crazy about Steam. With satellite internet I don't play online games yet I still have to connect to Steam to play single player games. What was worst was when I was on dial up. I bought the boxed version of HL2. I knew internet access was required, but thought it would be like other games where you just activate it or otherwise verify the game is legit. But not with Steam. As soon as I installed it it insisted on downloading a huge patch before it would let me start playing it. It took 5-7 hours over the course of several days before I could finally start a single player game of HL2. No matter what I did it still required Steam to connect to the net before getting back into a saved game too. So I had to kick everyone off the phone in order to connect to Steam first. And I'd have to wait for any other patch to download before playing any saved game. After the game was loaded then I could disconnect the modem. For that I will always have a distaste for Steam.
That isn't true, but you have to set up things properly. THen you can play without a connection, or like me, play faster without having to wait for anything. I find that very annoying too.

What is Offline Mode?

Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time you wish to play - this is particularly useful if you do not plan on playing over the internet and would prefer not to download new updates for your single-player games.

Please note that you must connect to the Steam Network and test each of the games you would like to use in Offline Mode at least once to set up your account and configure Offline Mode on your machine.

Using Offline ModePlease follow the instructions below to configure Offline Mode on your machine:

Start Steam online - make sure the Remember my password box on the login window is checked
Verify that all game files are completely updated - you can see the update status for a game under the My Games tab (when the game shows as 100% - Ready it is ready to be played in Offline Mode)
Launch the game you would like to play offline to verify that there are no further updates to download - shut down the game and return to Steam once you have confirmed that the game can be played
Go to Settings to ensure the Do not store account information on this computer option is not selected
From the main Steam window, go to File and select Go Offline
Click OK to restart Steam in Offline Mode

It's not quite that simple. If valve even see's a connection to the net it resets everything.Say your in off line mode and take your pc to a buddy's.to play CS.If his lan is hooked up to the internet when you start steam you are reset. When you take it home no more HL for you because you cant get steam to conect.Just done this 2 days ago so I know it's a fact.

I tried following the directions for 'offline mode'. It didn't work. HL2 wouldn't load until I connected. But once I got to the main menu, I could disconnect.

This is my only gripe about Steam that makes me do Fileplanet's D2D. I hate having to deal with getting connected to play my game. I have a Brother-In-Law that has even more of a hassle as he lives and works on a cruise ship.

I suggest you also use something like zonealarm to deny steam from ever seeing a connection once in offline mode if it seems a connection prevents offline mode working properly.

I have been in offline mode for months without any problems and that is with a constant connection. I have steam set to ask permission for a connection and I just say no.

It says it has a update to apply but I just keep saying no. Maybe that helps..

I find it very annoying that I pay for a game, but I have to wait on them to play. Turning off auto updates at least lets you choose when to update so you don't have to wait when you start a game.
