Re: [OT] NYS resident buying an out of state car

I bought a used car from a NJ dealer in 1991; they gave me a thirty day temporary, non resident tag to stick in the back window for the drive home. You just need to show proof of insurance. Back home, stand in line at the DMV with your bill of sale and FS-20s; pay the sales tax, title, tag and registration fees and you're good to go. The sales tax will be based on your residential address of record.

I wouldn't wait the full thirty days to get tags once you get back to NY, however.
