Unfortunately, suggestion 1 didn't work like I had hoped. Oh well. Suggestion 2 rocks. As for 3, if you don't believe it works well then I won't bother with it.

i think with #1, if you enable full keyboard access (keyboard and mouse prefs) you can change the setting to all controls
