Old pay phones and such sometimes had the inside of the return textured. also seen in some old gum ball
machines and token dispensers.

the only thing I'm having difficulty with the coin return theory is that there's no real "lip" to it. Normally there's a lip or hinge of some kind if they're talk like that. This one looks a lot like the spout on a teapot or percolator style coffee pot.

For the size of the scratches seen, the perimeter of the opening does seem to have very thin walls.

Nope. A couple of little clues. The material in the center is fabric, and even though we all have them, they are not common household items.
