It took a lot longer than estimated to complete - 2.5 hours - and that's after the initial rush has surely worn off. The system seems a little quicker, certainly browsing seems so, but it's too soon to say for sure. Even though I chose to retain everything I was given the option for, many of my settings were ignored or changed. No major fubar's so far, except I can't get glipper to run, and I use that quite often. Not sure how I feel about Firefox 3, and it wiped out my Firefox 2 so I can't use that (although it did retain most of my profile settings and bookmarks). I'm going to keep it for a more thorough shakedown, but it's easy for me to image this and revert if things get hinky. If I didn't have that option I might be more critical.

On the whole, it could have been worse, but it seems a bit unfinished, especially for LTS.

--

"My goal in life is to become the kind of problem that people throw money at".

cob_ : It's not bad, but it isn't great, either. Even though there was a medium bug report about certain Broadcom wireless cards having the wrong modules loaded, Hardy was released without a fix, and I don't think there's a fix yet. Gnome still seems confused about Windows shares; even when one is mounted successfully, it complains about it not being mounted, and shows duplicate folder icons on the desktop for it. This is the behavior I get from Places > Connect to Server. Windows network browsing still seems to be broken. I can't see any of my shares on multiple computers that are set up with Simple File Sharing on the same workgroup. Even after telling the power manager not to display the battery icon in the status panel unless it's discharging, if the computer is booted up while plugged in, the icon doesn't display, however, if it's removed from AC power and put back on it, the plugged-in icon remains. Still no decent Broadcom wireless drivers, although I don't really fault Ubuntu or linux in general for it. Media players still don't tell the user that they're missing certain codecs and where/how they can be obtained. Same goes for enabling Visual Effects - just fails, no feedback on why or how to correct the problem. In my case, it's because I don't have ATI's driver installed and configured for x.org, which seems like it'd be an easy thing to check and prompt for. I also get a message about the computer failing to suspend after waking it from suspension.

The good: wine is extremely easy to use now, I didn't even have to configure it after installing; the one Windows app I use with it is almost flawless. I'm one of the few who are glad Hardy went live with FF 3.0b5. Setting a desktop background from FF doesn't work, though. Suspension and hibernation work. Power management in general seems better. Network Manager seems to be vastly improved. I didn't expect it to actually configure and use WPA supplicant once my wireless driver situation was sorted out.

That's about it. Hopefully everyone else isn't as lazy as I am about submitting and updating bugs!
--
"No matter how hard you push and no matter what the priority, you can't increase the speed of light."

- RFC 1925

What's new, what's broken and so forth thanks.

I'm at work, not in front of my ubuntu machine, so I assume by network manager you mean that "network neighborhood" gui, and not the gui for network setup. It's not as happy on Hardy as it was on Gutsy. Opening the network manager, I can see the other machines in my workgroup, but the only one who's shares I can see is the machine running XP Home. You can easily bring up shares on your browser with smb://a/share/someplace, and the Connect to Network app will mount a share if you know the path. When I first installed hardy, I'd connect to a share and then double-click to open it, and I ended up with the same share mounted twice. That got fixed last night in the most recent update. Basically, it's not ready for primetime as a gui, but networking, samba, etc., work fine.
--
"No matter how I struggle and strive, I'll never get out of here alive".
COrampdog : I upgraded from gutsy to hardy and so far it seems pretty stable. I did have to reinstall my nvidia driver but it went pretty smoothly.

I must say that I do not care for the "awesome bar" in Firefox 3. I think it is way to cluttered and as of right now it can't be disabled without doing a couple things in about:config. Clear private data no longer seems to actually clear everything. I prefer the URL bar in Firefox 2. I do not like how FF3 includes my bookmarks and so much useless info in the URL drop down menu. FF2 was left intact during the upgrade so I have found myself using it more than 3.
