VOIP with WOW Internet

I had vonage with brighthouse (roadrunner) for 3 years. It worked fantastic. I moved to an area with WOW. My quality of service is completely gone. If I'm downloading, the phone is pretty useless (choppy, etc). The people at WOW have absolutely no clue what QoS is, or DOCSIS or anything. According to them, voip works just fine there (even though a service tech told me it doesn't)

From reading here, it seems that some people who have voip, WOW's own or otherwise have the same issue.

So, my question is this: Is there anyone out there who has WOW as their broadband provider who can successfully use voip during a heavy download? Or is it just a simple fact that their network can't support it, whether you use theirs or someone else's voip?

Thanks,
Don

If you saturate your downstream bandwidth, no matter what ISP you have you will have VoIP issues because the ACK requests won't be able to be sent back.

There are plenty here that use WOW and various VoIP providers without issues. I suggest you look at your router and make sure you have it's QoS options set right so that there is 128Kbps dedicated to the VoIP box at all times to avoid this issue.

I have absolutely no issues with VoIP (vonage) and heavy downloading. I just set the QoS in the router, having the voip be on the highest priority, so it's always clear. I still have occasional problems if I'm uploading heavily though.

The thing is that I'm using the exact same equipment (Linksys RTP300) I used before only now I have problems. It (and it's QoS capabilities) work fine when I'm not on WOW's internet.

I mean, if I can pick this router (and my phone and computer) up and go to a friend's house (not on WOW) and everything works fine, it's not my router.

I wonder if maybe it's just this particular area for WOW. I see you guys are in the northern suburbs, but I noted someone from Westland had similar issues.

Strictly out of curiosity, what routers are you guys using for this?

Thanks,
Don

I know there are a few people in your neck of the woods that has VoIP with WOW and no issues. But, yes, your issue could be really local to your segment of the area. What service level do you pay for? Have you run a speed test to see if you get the speeds you pay for?

I don't have VoIP, but I use a Linksys WRT-54g.

I think you would have better chance of having your question answered if you were to post in the Vonage forum. If you leave out the word Vonage you can post your question in the VOIP Tech Chat forum. There are some very knowledgeable people that frequent those forums and they should be able to help you.

You wont find your answer here.

Just out of curiosity, why won't he find it here? There are people here that may have Vonage and could help him. There could also be people close to him that have the same issue and could rule out a Vonage issue, or the opposite.

But I do agree, to get maximum exposure, to make a thread there too, to see if others are having issues with Vonage in general.
