| Considering getting a Playstation 3
I am considering buying a Playstation 3. Mainly for GTA4 and a couple of baseball games I can't play on PC. I was wondering whether it makes sense to get one now or wait until X date? I ask only because I don't know if they are going to upgrade it any time soon or make any changes in the near future. I don't want to also pay for it only to find out it's getting a price reduction one week later. So does anyone know whether it's a good time to get a PS3 right now? I also want to get a dualshock PS3 controller. Not sure if that comes with it standard or not.
Any help is appreciated. |

| What PS3 version do you want? what is your budget? I have the 40GB version and it is fine. I got the PS3 from eBay i paid $440 for it, it came with 8 games, bunch of EA Sports Games, i am not a gamer but i bought it for the Blue Ray..
If you have patience you can find similar good deals like mine on eBay. but for new ones, i buy them from amazon.com and the only new version i know of is the 80GB one and i am not sure if the prices will drop like you are afraid of..again that's why you need to buy it from Amazon since they have the 30 day thing where they can refund you the money if the price drops. |

Fobulous Premium join:2002-08-14 Sugar Land, TX | Nope, the dualshock would be extra. When i got mine, it included 3 wireless controllers, 8 games, and oh did i mention, he also included a PS2 slim? |

| Sure is alot "considering a ps3" threads lately.
There is no evidence/rumor/news from Sony about a price drop anytime soon for the ps3.
If you don't care about b/c to play ps2 games on the ps3, i myself would get the 40gig, the 40gig doesn't come with a dualshock3 controller however, if you really want that, you can pick one up at walmart for $49.
The 80gig metal gear solid 4 bundled is coming out june 12? not really sure on the exact date..that deal comes with the game,80gig,dualshock3 controller. For $499
It would be cheaper for you to get the 40gig then buy the controller at walmart, you'll get 2 controllers to then.
Hope this helps. -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdYueIC1pjM |

| However, if you want MGS4 and a dualshock controller getting the 80GB would end up being the better deal. Dualshock at $50 and MGS4 at $60 makes that total out to $10 over the price of an 80GB PS3. Add to that the additional USB ports, larger HD and backwards compatibility and it should be a no-brainer. |

If you dont care, go buy a 40 gb now.
If you wan the dialshock, add it on. -- It's all part of my rock and roll fantasy |

| reply to mike31mets I was also on the "considering a PS3" list for a while too. Finally pulled the trigger and got a new PS3 40g, GTAIV, and a remote control for the DVD player for $350 shipped. It was $450 or so, but I used the $100 off sony card promotion for new applications and then a Amazon GC I got for Christmas to bring the price down.
I bought mine for the blu-ray player as well. I have been looking at resurrecting my subscription at Netflix again or getting Blockbuster Online for Blu-Ray rentals.
However, GTAIV is another reason why. I am hesitant about the control system being a long time PC player, but I think this will be fun to play.
The MGS bundle I was tempted to wait for, but I already have a PS2 slim so I didn't need backwards compatibility. The only thing I was considering was additional space, but I can upgrade the HD later if I so choose to.
I got the PS3 yesterday but I didn't have a chance to hook it up and tonight isn't looking good either since I have to work until 6pm and then play hockey for 2 hours after that. I still haven't gotten my GTAIV or my remote yet so I am not in a huge rush though. -- My domain - Nightfall.net |

| reply to mike31mets i got a deal from Sears where they give me $50 back with the PS3 40gb and GTA4. i got the dual shock controller from buy.com for 43 bucks. i'm still in the middle of finals but i know that when i get home that PS3 will be waiting in my room at least.
One last question. A friend of mine tells me that the harddrive in the PS3 is removable and that one could put in their own SATA harddrive if they want. Is this true? |

Its a SATA Notebook hard drive, a lot different from a desktop sata drive. Yes, its easily upgradeable from what I have read. I have read some posts on the Playstation forums and tests show that 7200rpm drives outperform 5400 ones. There are recommendations and such. I will see if I can post a link to that thread. |

I will see if I can post a link to that thread. I upgraded one of my PS3's from its 60GB 5400 drive to a 200GB 7200 drive. There is little to no performance improvement. When I get around to doing it, the other PS3 will be upgraded to a 5400 250GB drive.
You are correct, it is a SATA drive, and is easy to replace. Instructions on how to replace it on in the user manual. Also there are several video's on replacing the PS3 hard drive on youtube. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

Follow the instructions on the youtube videos as there are little hints, but its very straight forward..

Tversity, does indeed seem to lack playing formats, it plays some of my AVI then others (same format) won't play them.
How do you go about installing a movie onto the harddrive, from my computer? -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdYueIC1pjM |

How do you go about installing a movie onto the harddrive, from my computer? That's because avi is just a container. Whatever is inside can be encoded differently.
I followed this guide for avi's, they've all worked since: »www.unplggd.com/unplggd/how-to/h···3-046182
As for the second bit, you can just copy the file over wireless or using a USB drive. |

| reply to mike31mets You pop the cover, undo a screw, pull on the tab, and swap out hard drives.
If there is little to no improvement by going to a 7200 then stick with a 5400. Not only are they cheaper but they run cooler. -- I'd take the time to insult your intelligence, but you probably wouldn't get it. |

| reply to mike31mets If anyone is interested, www.microcenter.com -supposedly- has the 80Gb MGS4 bundle available, shipped only, no store pickup.
Maybe their website needs to be updated, but if you add the bundle to you cart it lets you go the checkout at least.
If anyone has their Sony Card ready to go (and you verified with Chase that the offer you got from them will give you $100 back on ANY purchase over $299) you might be able to score the bundle. The rumor is that the bundle is being re-released in July too. -- Word |
