<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1504108"><b>hd_harry</b></A> : I haven't replied to your response until now because I wanted to wait until I got back to Southern California to see if I could make a dial-up connection using Linux.  Normally, I use my DSL connection when I'm in Southern California.  I'm back in Southern California, and I can make a dial-up connection from Linux.  That's what I'm doing now.<br><br>I've attached a portion of the log file that my Linux system creates, which includes the messages between my system and DSL Extreme while dial-up connections are being negotiated.  There are three snippets:  February 2008 from Phoenix, when I made a successful connection; May 2008 from Phoenix, when I could no longer make a connection from Linux; and today from Southern California where I can make a successful connection from Linux.  If you review the attachment, you will see that the prompts from DSL Extreme have changed between February and May for the Phoenix connection.  What I believe is another difference is that in addition to the normal squawks that the modem makes while the connection is being established, there are also two "dongs" that I hear in the middle of the normal squawks.  I don't recall hearing them in February, and I don't hear them today from my Southern California connection.<br><br>Therefore, I conclude that DSL Extreme has made some change in the way the dial-up connection in the Phoenix area is negotiated. <description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1504108"><b>hd_harry</b></A> : I'm trying to make a dial-up connection using a terminal application from both Windows 98SE and Linux.  This is prompted from not being able to make a dial-up connection from Linux whereas I could this past February, the last time I tried to.<br><br>Reviewing a Linux log file, I can see that there has been a change in the prompts that DSL Extreme sends out during the log-in process.  The prompt used to say "Username:/login:" after which I would enter my username (without @dslextrem.com).  It would then say "Password:" after which I would enter my password, and my connection would be established.<br><br>Now the prompt is "Please Sign-on:" after which I enter my username (without @dslextreme.com).  It then says "Password:" after which I enter my password.  It then replies with "Name, password pair incorrect."  This happens both on Linux using minicom and on Windows 98 using a US Robotics terminal program.  Note that I can connect to the internet from Windows 98 using the normal dial-up procedure.<br><br>I called DSL Extreme tech support.  The first person I talked to said that when I'm asked for my username I should enter it as username@dslextreme.com.  I tried that on both Linux and Windows, and in both cases, as soon as I pressed the Enter key, it immediately replied with "Name, password pair incorrect," not giving me the opportunity to enter my password.<br><br>I called back DSL Extreme tech support and told them that appending @dslextreme.com to my username didn't work, and I was essentially told "tough, we don't support Linux."  It seems like if DSL Extreme has made a change to the log-in process, they should be able to explain what has changed.  I would appreciate any advice from DSL Extreme as to what I can do to regain the Linux dial-up connectivity that I previously had.]]></description>
