| Austin TX: Very slow upload speeds
I have turbo-charged service but today only getting 90 kbps upload despite 14900 kbps download.
I called Tech Support and they see a signal problem and I have arranged a service call.
Anyone else seeing this? I am in zipcode 78752 in North Central Austin.
I'm going to swap out my modem today to see if that helps. |

| I swapped out the modem.
I'm now getting about 600 kbps uploads which is much better but short of the 1900 kbps I have gotten at times in the past.
I have a Tech Support truck roll scheduled for Tuesday.
I'll update this thread with results if any. |

| reply to jimzzzak I was also having lots of problems with my speed in the last two days.
every time I would reboot the modem the problem would go away. But I think I actually found the root cause to be my router. It seems that in the closet its located it was building up too much heat. I left the closet door open and havent had any problems with any upload or download speeds. Going to keep an eye out for it for another day or so and then will have to figure out how to keep the router from over heating.
here is my latest speedtest results |

jimzzzak Premium join:2006-10-08 Austin, TX | I had to call Tech Support to get my digital phone service back in operation after I got the new modem.
They reset everything on their end and my speed went to 15000/2000 at the same time my phone went back up. |

| reply to jimzzzak Scratch everything that I wrote about heat and all. I replaced the cable modem and the router and the problem returned. Turns out that steam client (for half life based games) was hosing the connection. It was uploading massive amounts of data taking up all the bandwidth for no reason. I came across this by monitoring the resource meter and seeing the upload maxed out. Apparently the client was updated on May 1st and there are many people experiencing similar problem on the steam forums. |

| reply to jimzzzak For any Steam user wondering about this problem, here's the thread where this is mentioned. It's 11 pages long right now. Oddly enough, I only have Verizon DSL and this update even with the Team Fortress 2 pre-load didn't stall or kill my connection at all, and I only have 768k/128k...

This topic suggested at the end to adjust the MTU to 500, shut off commercial and free firewalls, plug directly into the modem, and adjust Steam's packet rate. A few users have noticed that this has fixed their problem with Steam flooding their connection. Also, Valve should be releasing a patch soon for Steam to fix the packet rate problem.
EDIT: Valve released an update last night for the networking problem. Download it and install it if you can and see if things improve. |

The tech from RR came while I was not here.
He changed the cable/internet splitter in my home run closet.
Consistently I get excellent upload and download speeds in the early AM.
However, in the PM, my upload speed becomes extremely slow (0-200 kbps).
I have another tech coming on Saturday.
Any ideas from the forum? Could my neighbors be saturating the upload connection for my neighborhood? |

Good luck! |

Smith6612 Premium join:2008-02-01 united state | reply to jimzzzak Well, the download is pretty good though, considering how much the upload craps out at night. Looks like you might have some BitTorrent users near you who forget to stop seeding their files :P |

| The tech just left.
He claimed he was getting a lot of packet loss.
Therefore, the line to the house is at fault.
He is to replace it on Tuesday.
I'll report back then.

| reply to jimzzzak I had a terrible time with Road Runner. I changed to the turbo and it has been better. Previously I was also loosing phone service constantly. It good to know that I am not the only one that has had RR issues! Thanks, jimzzzak |

The tech replaced the line from my garage to the street. There is an underground cable from the garage to the house.
There was no significant improvement. When I checked packet loss last PM, it was 5% which was high according to the tech.
He came by today and ran tests during the day which showed no packet loss and good speeds.
Naturally I just got home and checked speeds:
12,500 kbps down/250 kbps up
Packet loss was 15% according to the way I remembered to do it via the command line: ping www.yahoo.com -t -l 1000
I spoke to the tech and he has referred the problem up the totem pole. Supposedly someone will call me tonight. |

| Two higher level techs came out this PM at about 7:30 PM.
Via testing they found that one of the ports on the pole was bad and they moved my connection to another one.
Unfortunately they were still getting packet loss at the street.
According to these techs, TWC will make a sweep of the street looking for whatever the packet loss problem is.
I am impressed to the extent that they are taking this matter seriously. |

| Well, I continue to be impressed.
I just got in and my upload speed was 1957 kbps. Usually at this time of the day it was 200 or less.
I am guessing that they carried out their sweep down the street and found the source of the packet loss (which by the way is zero according to a measurement I just took).
These guys know their stuff and actually carried through to find a subtle problem. Probably many other people were affected but leave it to me to do the speed tests when things don't quite feel like 15/2 and complain.
YMMV.
Addendum: Another speed test -
