| Notebook memory question/observation w/Vista
My HP notebook initially came w/Vista Home Premium and 1gb DDR2 installed.
Since then, I upgraded first to 2gb ram...then 3gb...and recently 4gb.
Now, don't get me wrong, really, I would've/could've/should've been satisfied with 2gb, frankly just a matter of having the spare cash and nuthin' better to do, if you know what I mean!
What surprised me a bit, keeping in mind that I am running a 32bit OS, are the results, and I am curious as to what other folks here have encountered:
At 1gb, the notebook actually ran Vista OK, no biggie, but I have understood that 2gb was a better level of ram for Vista.
At 2gb ram, it did run a bit "quicker", not night and day, but quicker.
Then at 3gb (1 - 1gb stick, 1 - 2gb stick, not "dual channel" at that point), I really noticed no difference either way at all in day to day usage.
Even though I understand that you can only actually utilize some 3.5gb or less with a 32 bit OS, I did go to 4gb, if only to regain the dual channel operation of the ram.
Surprisingly, I have noticed a real "boost" in overall system response, which frankly, although i am happy about that, I had really expected to feel a bit stupid, and that the 3d, and espeicailly 4th gb of ram was a waste of money!
This kind of goes against most of what I had expected to find. Even the W.E.I. score for ram took a nice jump (4.8 to 5.5) with the 4th gb added, where it did not change with 1gb/2gb/3gb installed...not that W.E.I. is all that important a benchmark.
How about anyone else here who have upgraded their notebook ram? I am curious as to whether this is common or not?
